I don't like getting death threats

In too many threads, the main theme becomes -- Gang up on the OP.

Indeed, this thread is hardly an exception.

The OP has a valid issue. All the people posting comments critcial of her response have absolutely no idea of the depth and breadth of this problem. I for one am glad to see it in the limelight.

"Killing you" from a sadistic troll, who incidently is making similar posts against the owner if the site, is a threat.  I have worked with battered and abused women.  I take threats seriously, even if you don't.

I graduated from high school in the 1970s.  Colleges degrees in the 1980s.

I've been around.  Listen and learn.

You need to learn what a real threat is then. Try acting like an adult and not a hysterical female. You give us a bad rep and perpetuate the stereotype. You just pissed some dude off. No sympathy here. Get over it, honey. I've been around too. This ain't no threat. The police would laugh at you.

Psychologists would call you an "enabler."  Karma, honey.

1.46 OVERREACT, OVERREACTION -- PSYCHOLOGY ABUSE TERMS, CONCEPTS

==== Overreact

MEANING: To react in an overly emotional or violent or other exaggerated manner to something that has occurred.

RELEVANCE TO ABUSE: Look for this pattern in someone you suspect of abusive behavior. Drama queens and people who love psychodrama overreact as part of the way they live. By overreacting abusers can change the subject, get the abused to focus on the abusers' problems and generally change the focus of communication.

PERSONAL NOTE FROM RICK DOBLE: All of us at some time will overreact for one reason or another but, as in other things, abusers may overreact often and it can be a controlling pattern in their behavior.

RELATED WORDS AND PHRASES: over the top, ballistic, dramatic, excessive

Cut and paste won out (long ago) over thinking on the internet.  Yawn.

ColonelKnight

Kiki, I think you're saying she's a typical manipulative person who validates her own feelings over those of others. I hear you!

But let it be her prerogative to decide if she thinks someone crossed a line. Agree to disagree I say.

Batgirl, agreed.

JamieDelarosa

Sad, but true.  If kiki were in Saudi Arabia, she would be stoning the rape victims.

Wait wait wait....you got rape threats? Thats a new one...

JamieDelarosa

That would be enough to make anybody want to leave the site.

Maybe, babytigrrr.  Cockroach trolls tend to scurry away under the bright light of day.  And if this helps focus the site on improved security, so much the better.  Don't you think?

Women get harassed on this site.  It needs to stop.

Totally agree Jamie. But sometimes responding to childish and immature remarks from obvious trolling isn't the way to go... I think the site admin should take a bit more responsibility also or give us more power as users to 'flag' this abuse and degrade the post or messages. The current method of submitting a ticket is pretty slow and laborious and I can't be arsed to do it ... as I imagine most people can't. And I imagine there are some posters that are habitual complainers and fill in tickets for the slightest misdemeanour. I don't know the answer... maybe posting a thread like you have may come up with something ‽‽‽

It would be noice if someone from the site admin team gave us their support once in a while or at least were 'seen' to show support for the women who feel victimised on this site (before we lose anymore).

Have you had any comment from anyone from the site following your threat? I doubt it.

JamieDelarosa

First of all, babytigrrr, let me compliment you on your use of the rare interrobang punctuation mark.  Well done. :-)

Second, your post makes a lot of sense to me.  Several other people have suggested not fighting fire with fire.  I am conflicted.

The comment I got on the ticket I submitted was that the account has been closed.

Babytigrrr

I lurve the interrobang ‽‽‽

Sometimes, I do enjoy replying to the odd troll. Troll-baiting should be a sport. ヅ

Depends how good/bad they are.

I think what people do recommend is to not feel so slighted over something silly from a nut. It'd be an accepted standard anywhere that he's a moron who possibly needs help. Shrug it off, knowing better as I'm sure you do.

Why did he get under your skin?

Any threats need to be taken seriously, and when they are accompanied with sexual harassment, they rise to another level.

I'll just leave it there.  Trollboy is active again tonight.

billyblatt

I sympathize with your situation. Are you still being harassed by him?

Then the trolls have won.

Reminds me of airport security.

Apparently he sent the same message to others.  A form of intimidation?  Or just senseless hatred?

I guess I need to get a thicker skin, what with all the stoners, amateur psychologists, and haters on the site. :-\

Prudentia

Within my first couple of days with this website, I've recieved a couple of unflattering messages.  Nothing was really sexually oriented, but mostly accusations of cheating.  I quickly looked through the security settings and made it so only friends can message me, or post comments (usually full of hate from what I've seen thus far) on my wall.  If I've been talking with somebody on the forums or in live and I think they are good people, I may accept a friend request (on a chess only basis).  I know that a person shouldn't have to restrict themselves to prevent abuse, but taking some precautions can make for a more enjoyable experience.  It's a lot easier to say "water off a ducks back," and move on, but in reality, we all can get annoyed at the right idiotic message.

I would just suggest having an apathetic attitude against immature posts in the forum.  If nobody would respond to such people, then they are just talking to themselves.  If they want to grow up a little bit, and add a useful piece of information, then to their surprise, people will respond to them.  I've noticed most trolling goes on in the non-chess topics.  There is some immaturity in the chess threads also, but I've seen that most people are really trying to be nice and helpful.

billyblatt

I won't say you should grow a thicker skin. Just try to better understand the situation. I have been in the same situation as well; not with death threats, but blocking troll chess players. When I posted about the problem I got attacked by the other members for having social problems.

I will tell you from experience not to expect too much from most of the forum members.

I think there a dozen or so awful people here, and they keep creating new accounts. I wouldn't waste my time and energy trying to change their mind or turn them into better human beings.

Also chess.com has made it a laborious process to send tickets. I thought it would be a good idea if each member could to a certain extent moderate their own thread; the trolls demanded that it would infringe on their rights and hamper balanced discourse.

I think chess.com is more concerned about elite players.

If they cannot control the member behaviour at least give us the tools to moderate our own space.

A new version is coming out in August. I am no getting my hopes up too much.

For sure!  It's a rare threat that needs to be taken seriously.

Whether real or imagined, these kind of rape threats are clearly "out there."
