No, I'm not talking about live chess. And I'm pretty sure I hit the submit button--I've been playing so long here that it's a bit of a habit now;)
Lost by timeout--it didn't accept my move
Are you playing using one of the mobile apps (iphone or android)? That happens frequently to me where the cell coverage is spotty -- I think the app gives up on trying to send the submitted move to the server and just goes back to the list of active games. If you're on an actual computer I'm not sure what could have caused it, unless your internet connection happened to have a hiccup just then.
Did you have the game open for a while before making your move? It times out after a while without telling you. I don't know what the session timeout is...maybe 30 minutes. I have had it time out lots of times when I open an analysis board and analyze for a while.
When it times out and you try to submit your move it will not acknowledge your move but it will also not warn you that it was not accepted (which it should) . So it can be hard to notice.
Thanks for telling me--that might have been it (although I'm not sure that I had it open THAT long). And I don't use the mobile apps, because I don't have a mobile phone. If I get, one, I'll be sure to keep the thing about spotty cell coverage in mind.
I've had the same thing happen that mark100net reported - but I always thought it was a program bug from opening the analysis board. If I make a tentative move on the main board, then open up the analysis board to think about it and mess around for a bit, then close analysis and click "Submit" on the main board, it will sometimes revert, and you have to re-make the move and resubmit it. You have to keep your eyes open. I think it also occurs on the game explorer. But maybe it's just that I hit this alleged time limit while messing around in analysis.
And yes, the cell phone thing seems to be for real... my highest win so far (against a 2000 player no less) apparently occured because his phone didn't actually submit the move for him and he wound up timing out. Kind of an anti-climax!

This is the first time I've had this happen. Last night, I had ~7 hours left in my two chess games against FYURER, and I made some moves (I distinctly remember playing BxN in my game as black, for example). I logged in this morning, and it said I'd lost both games by timeout. Apparently, it didn't accept my moves?
