0. Make sure you know the rules (how pieces move, plus exceptions like castling and en passant)

1. Try to control the center (start by moving center pawns forward)

2. Develop your minor pieces (knight and bishop) ASAP

2a. "Knights before bishops"

3. Castle early, preferably kingside

4. When you make a move, make sure you're not moving to a square that's both threatened and not defended by you, and that by moving, you're not removing needed protection from another piece

4a. ... unless you have a plan

5. Practice by playing a lot of games

... that's about it, I guess.
