You can never have a tournament of new players where you set a designated range close to 1200, unless you ask them not to play any rated games until the tournament starts.

They are new to chess.com online play as you intended. They likely joined when their rating was in the designated range. All five could be players of 3000 strength, you do not know yet. If you want players with a reliable rating, set games completed to 255. (That's the largest number allowed.)

Thanks for the reply but if tournament has been created with a certain settings, players not matching those settings should not be able to join the tournament.

The players likely matched the settings when registering. Removal is not automatic in member-created tournaments. (This caused tournaments to have fewer players than intended.) You have to remove out of range players manually before starting the tournament, which is why all tournaments with a designated range should be on manual start.

TasDude, while I appreciate your inclination to help others, when you give suggestions without bothering to look into the problem first, your helpful comments instead of cheering the OP, quickly become a source of irritation.

FYI, the tournament was created today only and within minutes 1400 - 1900 level players could join..

In this tournament (also started today) all players are out of range: http://www.chess.com/tournament/team-indias-welcome-to-new-online-players-tournament-002

Is it that in "by Invitation" tournaments, some/all settings are overridden? In other words if you invited a person, then the settings of the tournament don't matter?

Two possibilities spring to mind:

  • the players were IN RANGE when they signed up, but they have subsequently drifted out of range before the tournament started.
  • the TD has adjusted the range after some players joined (but before the tournament started).

Both possibilities were not true in this case, however Shajian (also a super admin of Team India) messaged me in parallel that if you send an invite, then out of range players can also join. Looks more like a bug than feature as it is not documented in "Who can join" page.

You'd better raise a bug report then.

Yes Artfizz, done that at the same time when posted my gripe here.

Strewth - you're efficient: you knew I was going to give the wrong answer!

Ha ha. But seriously, if you had told me before I posted the problem here that you would be answering, I would have waited for your answer before sending bug report.

Ratings and games completed. Superceded.

Timeout ratio. Enforced.

Thanks TadDude. Hmm... this makes life difficult if it is by design (seems a bug to me though). OTOH if it is a bug we can expect a resolution sometime in future.

Beester

Until the "bug" is fixed you may want to ensure your tournament doesn't autostart so you have a chance to review those in your tournament and remove those that are outside of the tournament parameters...  Cheeky buggers can always slip in at the last moment too...

Skand

Yes B, that could be done. What we really need is a way to create tournaments for a group, without making it "by invitation only".

Or we should be able to send a message to a list.

Beester

Agreed... I put on, or use to put on, quite a bit of tourneys and had to manage them closely to adhere to the criteria put forth for the tourney...  I took the time to maintain csv files for rating range list for the reasons you stated...  It would be nice for a group to have an export to csv file with rating ranges so they could be sorted and used at will.
