What exactly is email chess?

I see references in postings to "email chess"? Is this chess in which you actually play via email, without logging into the site?

I play on-line chess and am familiar with email notifications -- but in those, you click on the link and then go to the site to make your move. I know about this.

What I'm thinking of is an email-only feature, in which the moves are exchanged via email (but hopefully with a board included)? Does that exist on chess.com? I'm not sure if it's possible, but if anyone can do it, I know the wizards at chess.com can!

Is there a way to do that so that the updated board appears with each new move?  At work I have access to e-mail, but not to Chess.com...

Thank you.  Oh well!

Got it, understood. I played real correspondence chess way back in the day, with the postcards and the little cardboard books, I know exactly what you mean. I played in one two-round tournament (a USCF Golden Knights) that took three years to complete.

The question is: is chess.com keeping track of these games and rating them -- or is this just a complete sideline between two players who just exchange email addresses and then go at it on their own?

I'm sure it's not too difficult to develop a system whereas the e-mail goes through a third party which would generate board images to go along with the e-mail and such :)

Are you volunteering to develop that system? let me know when it's ready!
