gg is equivalent to shaking hand after a game of hockey or soccer. It is not offensive, it is a customary way of thanking your opponent for the game.

or is it?

yes. Yes it is. the genesis of the saying "gg" is that. Good games or bad games, shaking hands at the end is a sign of respect for your opponent, nomatter how the game went.

well in my case, it does not matter who types 'gg' first after the game though there is truth that some players do it to insult their opponents, i see it as a mutual understanding if not respect of being able to just play and enjoy the game of chess, the appreciation of the challenge after the game, i'm the first one to type 'gg' after a game that i just lost to show my opponent i had a great time playing with him, and to remind myself i still have a great deal to learn in this game... so like just be a sport, dont be bothered by those two little letters, if you love the game just be better at it, there will always be arrogant people, dont be bothered by them and just enjoy the game

it's such a revelation how you see the good in everything.

Flaming users isn't allowed you better clean up your act soon troll.

"Troll" is so widely abused on this site it doesnt even mean anything anymore, just another overused word of abuse a lot of people use when they dont have anything intelligent to say when people disagree with them. Watch the flaming yourself.

People, saying GG is not arrogance and never will be, if i was arrogant after a game, i would simply say something like 'you r shit i owned you, that was the easiest win i ever had, can i have a rematch? its free rating points!' The people like that on this website are the ones, who, when they play me type 'STUPID NAME' in the chat box.

Get over it people.

Not only 55 pages of this, but a whole other thread as well

I don't say gg very often, but it's usually after a very close game in which both players had a good chance of winning. Saying gg after a game isn't arrogant, as I've had some opponents say it after losing to me. They are just being a good sport.

Phelon

If you don't say gg you basically don't know the etiquette of the game and are being rude.. Is it arrogant to say thank you after a waiter brings you a meal, or help old ladies across the street?

In some online games it's customary for the loser to say 'gg' when resigning (I'm mostly thinking of Starcraft or similar strategy games). For the winner to do so first is considered very poor manners.

I'm guessing that the OP applying this view to chess, that's all.

Different games have different customs and cultures, threads like this will serve to define what chess players consider good/bad form. Funnily enough, despite the age of chess as a game, it's still a pretty new online culture. Other games have had the chance to debate all this and decide what constitutes good and bad behaviour, because they have been played online for almost 15 years now.

It's natural, no one should be upset about anything at this point really.

Personally I think it's fine for either player to gg if a game is completed.

If someone in a winning position says it before the game is over, well, that I'd consider pretty rude.

In either case, it's natural to get a wave of negative emotions when losing any game. Anything to compound that by the winner is poor sportsmanship, and everyone should realise that even well intentioned comments by the winner may be taken as derogatory ones when emotions rise.

It's tough online! You can't just smile and pat someone on the back to convey your good intentions. So just keep that in mind and throw some smileys in there or something.

How about half-way across the street, then dancing backwards singing Let the Devil take the hindmost?

Phelon

I guess that would be the equivalent of just typing one g after a game?

chavez33

every game is a good game. your learning and having fun. gg doesnt always mean well played through out, it may be based off just one intresting position.

To me personally all abbreviations in stead of using proper phrases or dialogue are impolite whether they are meant well or not, say what you've got to say otherwise do not bother at all, is my opinion. I sometimes say to my opponent "gg" when I win but then it was a really good game and not just a shitty win. It will then be a complete sentence how I appreciated this particular game and straight offer a rematch. IMHO that is okay, if not, well I can't please everybody, sorry.

Another hypocrite.

Read better, mod edit--language

Write better, Sir.  And try not to contradict yourself.

1. this is not a game's chat box

2. there are proper phrases used

3. There is a dialogue

just in case you missed it, ladyboy.

That strikes me as proper usage.

After clobbering someone because of poor rodent control, drunkenness, or lack of chess skills, saying gg might might come across as arrogant boasting, despite kind intentions. Thanks (or thx) is less likely to be so taken and is a better conditioned (or automated) response. Saying gg in such situations also might be taken as revelation that the speaker (typist) lacks understanding of what consitutes a close and well-fought chess game. He or she should be pitied.

All this sensitivity is just ridiculous. Why don't people just concentrate on playing chess and ignore all these online salutes. Forget about saying 'hi', 'gg', etc Just play!! Personally, I ignore all messages from my opponents....yes, cause thats what you are when you play against me, my opponent. So I don't want to say, talk, or communicate anything with you except for my anger all over the board. Keep your friendiness and interest in socializing somewhere else....just play darn it!!!

Because darn it, chess is a solitary game and better played alone and not with another.

Not

Your original statement

To me personally all abbreviations in stead of using proper phrases or dialogue are impolite whether they are meant well or not, . . . blah blather yada . . .

contained nothing indicating it was restricted to chatboxes.

Just in case you missed it.

But I'll give you a C for effort this time for coming up with a name you think might bother me (didn't work, by the way) that the moderators won't have to censor from your post.

Stay in the shallow end with the other kiddies.
