requiring members be at least 13 or have a parent/guardian create and monitor . . .
"Require" is an awfully strong word.
Especially in the light of the enforcement mechanism.

is there a way to find out what age people are in here
In "real life" we quickly estimate people's age, and that helps guide our social interactions.
So in some sense it would be ideal if there were less anonymity online and everyone's age was known.
But of course in another sense that leads to a lot of privacy and abuse concerns.

Maturity level is more often estimated and in full understanding that some children are far more mature than some 40-somethings.
llama is there an upper limit to the number of accounts one can acquire?
I suppose the limit is related to the amount of memory available on chess.com severs ![]()
The rules say only 1 account open at once.
This ability to enforce this rule exists on a continuum with 2 main factors: 1) how technically literate the would-be abuse is and 2) how motivated chess.com becomes to get rid of them.
So I guess the sweet spot is high technical knowledge paired with minor abuses. I'm sure some trolls have had over 100 accounts open simultaneously.

11 year old account and rated 110. Red flag...
The 10 year gap is a little worrisome

Some people guess passwords on old accounts.
Although this guy has played a lot of games this year so... is probably a normal person... other than the sandbagging of course.
Yeah, I like Al's discussion group because it's casual and the people are not insane... not that I've done much shopping around, but it's the only discussion group I know of that's like this.
I also abandoned OD many years ago.
Normal person. Could you qualify that?
I like to look at total games played. I don't judge for having only a handful, but if someone has played over 1000 games then I tend to see them more favorably because even if they troll it means they're not here only for trolling.
I'm in my late 30s so I'm not as old as you guys, and we didn't live in a big city, so there wouldn't have been chess playing in the park anyway.
I have thought about similar things though. As a kid I'd spend my summer riding my bike around. I don't know if kids do stuff like that anymore. Everyone has their own personal computer (on their phone).
I wanted to start riding a bike again, so I was doing a little shopping... they're freaking expensive! I had no idea.
I mean, a bike that costs as much as a car... somehow doesn't seem right.
i think phil would fit in well at al ternative discussion , gonna give al a nudge see whether he agrees
there is always choice mate , and you are here because you choose to be , so if you dont like something say no , but if something appeals to you then put your x in that box

The site doesn't ask for ages in account creation, other that requiring members be at least 13 or have a parent/guardian create and monitor the account. So, no, there isn't a way unless someone just happens to give that information.
It's just this site man. Doesn't collect and share enough information about members. Stuff these folks share anyway in the famous reveal posts. Finding like minded people to play is a challenge.
ah ok , well you know that if you dish it out it gets returned , i will think of a suitable tease , lol

So if they are under 13, but lie and say they are older, what do you do about it?
Officially, only a parent/guardian can open an account for someone under 13. I don't know what staff might do if confronted with proof an account is both under the age and wasn't created by a parent/guardian.

Well, to be fair, if an underage child is accessing the internet, this site is the least of the parent or guardian's problems........
