Anyone know about spider identification?

No caffeine for me, thanks! Shortly after picking up 'Ol Thunder (a Remington 870 Express Super Magnum Shotgun, modified with a Knoxx Spec-Ops II R.R. Stock) to give it a once-over of gun oil, I happened to glance down at the spot where I had picked it up and saw what is by far the biggest and meanest looking spider I've ever seen in the house. After considering shucking a round and using the business end (just kidding, all you anti-gun folks... I'd have to fix the floor), I took careful aim with the butt-end and sent it back to hell... and now, I'm kinda curious what this [explitive explitive explitive, shimmy and shake] is. Can anyone identify it? I didn't smash it too hard... just enough to kill it! Yes, I hate spiders... ALMOST as much as rattlesnakes... and I wear one of those (the rattle of a kill that was cast in silver) around my neck as a lucky talisman (and since then haven't had to kill another, or blow another hole in the foundation of the house, knock on wood)

So, long story short (oops, too late!) can anyone identify the remains? Initial instinct is a wolf spider.

looks like a wolf spider or if it's more crablike a huntsman spider

When daylight hits I'll perform an exam... apparently the configuration of the eyes can tell me if it's a wolf spider. I know they're not a threat to humans, just an irritated bite, but like I said, I HATE SPIDERS!

Also, I have heard of wolf spiders in my region, but not the hunstman. That said, people claim brown recluses, with their nasty necrotic venom, do not exist in my area, but tell that to my Uncle who was bit years ago and lost a small amount of tissue. Guess people don't realize that species can travel from one region to another and develop populations where they didn't exist before.

Brown recluse or fiddlebacks as I grew up, in Oklahoma are small. You didn't get bit that's what's important. Wolf spider is probably correct.

In Japan huntsman spiders have similar markings but the way the legs are splayed sets the spider apart. I once woke up in Miyakonojo with a hand-sized huntsman spider inches from my face.

Thought we were beyond this childishness, but oh well... my recently cleared (in the spirit of letting bygones be bygones) blocked user list just got a return visitor... *sigh* Sorry kay, but you lack the maturity to participate in any of my threads apparently. Oh well, what a tragic loss...

After examining him in a better light setting (I wanted his remains out of the house!), the eyes seem to indicate a wolf spider. But I'm certainly no spider expert, hence why I brought it up here in Off-Topic for folks like yourself to weigh in.

I looked up the huntsman after you brought it up and I can rule him out. Much different body type than my little visitor.

Can't tell to much from the mangled remains but I would guess a sun spider.  The are harmless but can be VERY aggressive.  I've had them charge me from 6 feet away across the livingroom floor, only to be met with a well placed sneaker.  Glad you are a gun guy.

Looked up the sun spider, couldn't be him - The abdomen and head are much different. Sun spider looks elongated, whereas this guy is fatter. Never even heard of the sun spider before actually (and kind of glad I haven't, given your description of the crazy things charging!)... learning new things every day here on chess.com Cool

P.S., I suppose we shouldn't mention guns around kaynight... he gets jealous 'cuz he can't have one! Laughing Nah, just kidding, proud and responsible gun owner here! Cool Sorry kay! Tongue Out

Did you smash the little thing because it looked at you mean?

If it looked like the photo in the link below before you killed it then it was a Brown Recluse.

Thanks Susie, but once I was able to examine it in better light with a magnifying glass, the eyes gave it away - It was a wolf spider.

Speaking of the Recluse, people swear up and down that the Brown Recluse doesn't exist in my region (as if spiders can't travel in luggage, etc., from one region to another... and tell it to my Uncle, who was bit by one and lost a chunk of flesh off his arm that took a long time to heal)... but anyways, after researching further, it was suggested by one website to look at the eye configuration, which survived the recoil pad of my shotgun, and sure enough, 4 on the bottom, then 2 large and 2 medium eyes. Apparently it couldn't do much more to me than cause an inflamed bite site... but a nasty looking spider is a nasty looking spider in my book, poisonous or not! I admit it, I'm a scaredy cat for spiders. Undecided

Weird it was in a region it didn't belong to

Typical gun people. Kill first, then begin thoughtful inquiries.
