I appreciate we think first cause? I mean how can there be a cause without an effect. Chicken and egg scenario.
But this is because we we conditioned to think in a material way. Energy exists independent of material. Force. Natural forces and symmetries.

Hawking talks about at the very beginning there is no time. We are talking about a quantum world where Newtonian physics don't apply.
