Epilogue

No, no, no.” The creature paced back and forth. “She wasn’t supposed to find out yet--No, too early. Far too early.”

“You’re way too paranoid,” a shadow hissed. “She will find out. In time. All in good time.”

“This could be the end of our plans,” the creature said. “All ruined. Ruined, ruined, and all from what?”

The creature in the shadow hissed. “Control yourself, Mistress.”

“--From a pair of twins!” The creature snarled ferociously. “No, no. I should’ve trusted Celeste to keep it safe!”

“Shhh. She hasn’t let them in yet…”

“Why did I create that bridge anyway?” The creature raged. “Why, why why…” the snarls faded to whimpers.

“We’ll conquer the world soon, soon.” The shadow moved forward a bit. “Patience.”

“No,” the creature said. “I’m done waiting.”

Chapter 1: Moonlight Sonata

Stella walked down the halls of  her school, the Moonlight Academy. She noticed everything that happened and everything she saw.

    Cobweb, in the dusty bookshelves.

    Chirping, from crickets outside.

The rough feel of stone on Stella’s hands.

The familiar odor of musty floor tiles.

    And piano.

    The piano.

It was 5:00, the end of class for the day, and the piano was always ringing through the corridors. Ms. Celeste Belladonna-Zelda was always the one playing it.

“Hello, Ms. Celeste!” Stella waved to her.

“Hello, Stella,” Ms. Bella-Zel said to her, her teeth a bit clenched.

“Whatever is the matter?” Stella paused.

“Nothing…” The teacher shrugged. “Just a bad day. I had some friends come to me last night.”

    “Last night?” Stella frowned.

    “Last…yesterday.” Celeste Belladonna-Zelda smiled.

“What are you playing this time?”

“Moonlight Sonata, because it just feels so powerful and always relates to my own life.”

“Oh,” Stella said, and smiled. “Well, Basix feels the same way about listening to Ariana Grande.”

“Oh, please.” Ms. Belladonna-Zelda laughed. “We can’t get him to shut up about it, can we?”

“No, definitely not.” Stella tilted her head. “Well, it was good seeing you.”

“Definitely,” Ms. Belladonna-Zelda smiled. “Oh, and one more thing?”

Stella paused while walking up the stairs. “Yes, Ms. Bella-Zel?”

“Two things, now that I think about it. One: Please, stop calling me that silly nickname. Two: Some things…” she hesitated. “Some things we just can’t change about the way life goes and…who we are.”

Chapter 2: Dorm Room

Wow.” Stella said as she walked up the stairs. “Miss Belladonna is always so…mysterious. I can never tell if she’s serious or not. I’ll go a long loop around the academy to clear my head,” she decided.

As she walked around, she noticed every ordinary thing: Ms. Belladonna-Zelda’s closet, with a DO NOT ENTER sign hung on the door by a loosening nail, her roommates, Sunshine Inferno and Adalais Blackbird, sketching, writing and planning a book.

Stella had already read Sunshine’s “Call It What You Want” writing but hadn’t read Adalais’s creation.

Stella rounded a corner and saw sunshine spilling into the room. Basix was sitting on a windowsill, blasting Ariana Grande at full volume. Stella rolled her eyes.

“Is that the only thing you can listen to?” She asked.

Basix mumbled, “Hm? Yes, and? We can’t be friends. Stuck with you. Save your tears. Bye.”

Stella sighed and rolled her eyes. Basix could only speak in Ariana Grande song titles.

She walked along the hall, spotting Lilyana on her phone and Mizza Pizza talking with Jaswin. She walked by the Physics room and the Social Studies room and caught Snowy doing some studying in the library. She walked by and saw Kea talking to Bumfuzzle.

Kea cried, “No DoN’t FeEd Me PiZzA bUmFuZzLe!” in a low pitch-high pitch pattern, the signature way he texts.

As the other students goofed off, Stella walked up to her dorm room. Adalais was already there.

    “Oh!” Stella said. “Hi, Adalais.”

Adalais Blackbird barely looked up from her paper. “Hi, Sunshine.”

    Stella tilted her head. “Sunshine?”

“Hi, Sunshine and Stella.” Adalais corrected herself.

Stella turned around. Sure enough, Sunshine was right behind her.  “Hi, Sunshine!” Stella smiled.

    “Hi,” Sunshine said coolly.

“What’s going on with Allegra and Aspen now?”

    “No spoilers,” Sunshine winked.

“Well, I can’t say I didn’t know that was coming. Adalais, I have no clue what you’re writing, but how’re you doing on Khan Academy?”

Adalais mumbled something like “47%, on Unit Seven” and continued writing.

Stella jumped back onto her bed. “Sunshine, guess you liked having GM Chessminator around,”

Sunshine sighed. “Hasn’t been the same since he left the academy.”

    Stella shrugged. “Any new gossip?”

“Well, Ellie wants the headmaster to play her in chess…” Sunshine shrugged, then pulled out a dusty piece of paper. “Here. Snowy started a petition to bring back GM.”

Stella stuck out her tongue in disgust. “That paper is dirty.”

“Well, imagine the people who want to bring him back.”

Stella stared out the window. “I just can’t imagine people have such a simple solution to things.”

Chapter 3: Class

“Itzelina, can you demonstrate?” asked Mrs. Lily. Mrs. Amber Lily, Stella’s favorite teacher. She taught Marine Biology.

Barely anyone paid attention in class. Basix had headphones on, Itzelina Lorian was on her phone, scrolling through Mandolorian memes, Ally Gator was speedrunning Don’t Look Down gimkit, Snowy was studying, Adalais was reading a bible and Lilyana was filing her nails.

    Itzelina jumped up. “Whoa--what?”

    Mrs. Lily repeated, “Demonstrate.”

    “What?”

“Use this handmade hydrometer to detect the density of this water.”

“Uh--sure.” Itzelina took the hydrometer. “So…”

As Stella watched Itzelina struggle, she noticed something from the corner of her eye. Two pairs of eyes. Watching the class.

“Hey!” Stella thumped her fists on the desk and stood up. Look!”

Sure enough, everyone looked at the person staring at them in the shadows. A girl named Paz rolled her eyes. “It’s just Headmaster Erik, everyone. Calm down. And who’s with him?”

Ellie was beside him. Erik rolled his eyes. “Honestly, after you started chanting ‘Erik should play Ellie’ I think people should start saying, ‘Erik is too busy to play Ellie.’”

Ellie stepped shyly beside him. “Humph.”

Erik stepped out of the way. “But…the man has spoken.” Behind him, was the person Stella last wanted to see.

    Her own twin sister.

Chapter 4: Luna Nova

“Soooo…” Luna Nova, Stella’s twin sister, said. “How’s the academy?”

“Oh, fine,” Stella gritted her teeth. She leaves for a year and comes back like nothing happened! Outrageous! “Who’re you sharing your dorm room with?”

“Well…” Luna shrugged. “Lilyana, Valentina, Dovetail and Snowy.”

“You got a five-person dorm? Wait, ohhhh, them. They’re part of the Girls Only club. Heard they’re in a war with the Boys Only club. By the way, Lilyana and Valentina gossip, Dovetail listens to Girl In Red, and Snowy studies too much. Honestly, she’s part of a club called The FanWings, and they’re just war and violence. They have a bunch of plans and secret clubs.”

Luna grinned. “I wouldn’t be surprised if you were one of the gossip girls.”

“I can give you a full description of all the people. GM Chessminator left the school, Sunshine Inferno writes books, Adalais does Khan Academy and is study buddies with Snowy, Basix listens to too much Ariana Grande, ummm…Vans and Soccer VA are the starters of the Boys Only Club…”

“I can figure it out on my own, thanks,” Luna said, and glared at Stella.

“What did I do?” Stella crossed her arms. “You left on a year-long cruise with all of the gold that I found!”

Luna scowled. “Well, you found the gold at midnight without me, and I found the map!”

“You found the map, but I found the gold.” Stella scowled back. “I found the gold. Period.”

“Well, you wouldn’t’ve found the gold without my help!” Luna snapped.

“Your help? Since when did I need your help?” Stella scoffed. “You wouldn’t’ve even known there was gold, let alone a map, without me!”

“What is happening over here?” A figure stepped out from the shadows.

    A teacher. Mr. Wind.

“Just a problem, Mr. Wind.” Stella paused.

    “What is the problem?”

The twins said in unison, “Her.” and pointed at each other.

“My,” Mr. Wind said. “When did the problem occur?”

The twins said, “A year ago.”

    “What happened?”

“She took a year long cruise and paid for it with the gold I got!”

“Well, Stella couldn't’ve found the gold without me!”

    “Because of me!”

Mr. Wind held his hands up. “Well, then it was a year ago. Why fuss about it now?”

Stella stomped off angrily to her dorm. “Because she returned now,” she whispered.

Mr. Wind called after her, “Why do problems from the past pop up in the future? They belong in the past.”

Chapter 5: Orchestra

“Riingg!” The wake-up bell rang as Stella Nova sleepily got up from bed. Stella grabbed her violin case, her rosin and music sheets.

“Where are you going?” Adalais yawned. “Orchestra? Poor you. It’s 6:00 in the morning. You chose orchestra in the early morning?”

Sunshine was tossing and turning in her bed. “Aspen…Allegra…Violet…Ice cream…”

Adalais rolled her eyes. “Guess she hasn’t gotten over chapter 3 of Call It What You Want,” she shrugged. “Or was it chapter 4?”

Stella groggily turned on the lights, but turned them off right away because Sunshine sat up, yelped and screamed, “PAZ!”

Stella sighed and headed downstairs. Other orchestra students were also rushing down the hallway to Ms. Celeste Belladonna-Zelda’s classroom.

“Welcome, welcome!” Ms. Belladonna-Zelda greeted them all. “I’m delighted to have you here!”

    Snowy raised her hand.

    “Yes?”

“We see you every two days,” Snowy said. “So why are you welcoming us?”

Ms. Belladonna-Zelda beamed. “Good question. Because a professional violinist is coming to visit!”

    Stella raised her hand.

    “Yes, Stella?”

    “Hillary Haughn?”

“No,” Ms. Belladonna-Zelda chuckled. “Someone you’ve never heard of. She’s also a conductor! Can you believe it? I’ll get to rest my hands.”

    “Okay…? Who?”

“Her name is…” Ms. Belladonna-Zelda stepped aside. “Behold! Mistress Evergreen!”

A figure in a cloak stepped out.

“Now, do you want to perform, or…” Ms. Bella-Zel paused.

“I’ll just watch your students this time.” Mistress Evergreen took a seat.

“Okay!” Ms. Bella-Zel said, just as cheerily. “Suit yourself. And a one, and a two, three, four…”

The orchestra began playing, and as Mistress Evergreen settled down with a curve in her smile, Stella knew just something wasn’t right…

              °☆.。.:*・°☆☆

“Bravo! That was magnificent!” Mistress Evergreen applauded the players.

“Truly,” Ms. Bella-Zel agreed. “Now, hurry off to your next class. Scribblers’ Society class students, Mrs. Etch would like to meet you outside.”

Chapter 6: Scribblers’ Society

“And you should always express yourself through your writing,” Mrs. Etch was saying. “Try it!”

Mrs. Etch went around, reading over people’s shoulders.

“Sunshine, nice work! Adalais and Stella, I know you’re stumped on what stories should be like, but please, don’t be. Snowy, ah, an autobiography! About who? Not a famous person? Ste--ah.”

Snowy smiled and continued to study Stella.

Stella glared back at her. Creepy kid, she thought. Then she wrote:

Once upon a time there was a creepy snowflake. Stella crushed the snowflake.

    Stella erased it, feeling embarrassed.

Once upon a time there was a haunted moon. Every time a soul passed by the moon, the moon grew bigger and swallowed the soul.

Every time the moon swallowed the soul, it had complete control over the person and wreaked havoc on every city.

“Excellent work, Stella Nova!” Mrs. Etch clapped. “Care to make it more…lengthy?”

“No prob,” Stella said grumpily. “Oh, look, it’s 7:58. Almost end of class.”

“Writing takes no time,” Mrs. Etch smiled. “Continue.”

Stella pretended to move her pencil along the paper as she waited two minutes. As soon as the bell rang, she jumped up.

    “END OF CLASS!” She said.

“Yes, you may go,” Mrs. Etch replied. “But keep thinking! Writing opens our minds and fills us with knowledge. Remember that. It’ll do you well.”

Stella walked along the halls to her next class. She turned sharply around a corner and found her at Mrs. Benson’s math class. Wow, this is silly, Stella thought. Turned the wrong way. Humph. Stella walked the other way and ended up in the shadows. Huh, I could’ve sworn--

Her thoughts were interrupted by soft piano music. And it played Moonlight Sonata.

“Wait--” she said, then everything went black.

Chapter 7: Collision

What--where am I? Who am I? Stella woke up to confusion.

“Where am I?” she wondered out loud.

“Your new home,” a familiar voice rasped. “Hold on. Let old Celeste get the other one.”

    Mistress Evergreen. The ‘famous’ musician.

    “Wait…Celeste?”

“You mean ‘ol Ms. Belladonna? Yes,” Mistress Evergreen frowned and pulled out a small clay figure of a violin. “Celeste!”

    “Yes?” The violin hummed.

“Get Luna! Do you have her?”

The speaker paused. “No, Mistress. She’s disappeared from the Academy.”

No matter how much Stella hated her sister, her heart still pounded in her chest. Oh my gosh, I’ve been kidnapped, my sister is being targeted. Flee, Luna, run!

“Let me out!” Stella banged on the wall. “I’m gonna release my fists on you!”

“Let me guess,” Mistress Evergreen turned around. “You can’t.”

“YES I CAN!” Stella lashed out with her fists raised. “I’m gonna give you a piece of myself!” Stella darted forward, her hands aiming to punch Evergreen’s face. But instead Stella’s hands stopped in midair, surrounded by black shadows.

    “A WITCH!” Stella backed away.

“I prefer sorceress, darling,” Mistress Evergreen. “See that, Madame?”

Stella frowned and pushed her hands forward. Mistress Evergreen snapped and the black shadows turned around, jerked Stella’s fists to slap Stella’s head.

Stella, having a bloody nose, was panting now. “You and your evil forces, um…will not conquer Earth or meet your goal or whatever!”

Mistress Evergreen snapped her head back, staring at Stella with bloodshot eyes. “Oh, yes, dearie. Ever since these worlds collided, I’ve realized one thing: Darkness will rise to bring the light.”

Chapter 8: The Mistress’s Daughter

“No…no…” Stella panted. “Darkness means harm.”

“Silly girl,” said Mistress Evergreen. “There cannot be light without darkness.”

“There shouldn’t be darkness.” Stella shook her head. “Wait, here I am, talking to darkness. Wow, offense, actually.”

“Watch your mouth,” another girl stepped out. “I am the Mistress’s daughter.”

Stella laughed. “No, two darknesses! The world can’t stand it.”

She snapped her fingers, and a heavy metal wire appeared around Stella’s neck and tightened. “No more back talk,” she said.

“Okay, …” Stella’s face went purple. “Whoever you are.”

“The name. Is. Aurora.” Aurora’s purple-blue hair floated around her head.

    “‘Kay, Ariel.”

    “AURORA!”

    “Ari.”

    “Aurora.”

    “Ali.”

    “Aurora…”

    “Ariana?”

Aurora sighed and snapped her fingers. Stella suddenly felt sick. The whole place spun. “Aurora,” she croaked out.

“Good.” Aurora snapped her fingers and the light-headedness suddenly disappeared.
