People believe in horoscopes because it makes them feel more secure about their decisions and lifestyle when they are convinced that their actions do not affect their own futures. People less secure about their lifestyle and decision-making skills will be more likely to believe it because they feel like they no longer have any responsibility.
I think horoscopes have a negative effect on society not because they're fake, but because they promote the beliefs that the only way to live a happy life is to wait around for something good to happen to you.
