New Hobby - As Ordered By Wife

So, my wife sat me down on Saturday and told me I need to get a new hobby that will get me out of the house.  I'm a stay-at-home dad and that basically translates into being at work every hour of every day.  Which was great for a while but now I don't relax because I'm always at work.  So, the long and short of it is that I need to get a new hobby and I haven't really been taken with anything so far.  I even went as far as to look up the location and times of the next Seattle Chess Club meeting.  It's a 40 minute drive though so I'm not sure if I'll be hitting it up or not.  Anyway, I'm taking suggestions.

chess is a very flexible and inexpensive hobby :)

lol yeah, that one was the obvious choice. :D  But it doesn't get me out of the house and moving is the problem.  My firend suggested Airsoft but I'm growing out of cops and robbers at an alarming rate here.  I thought about SCUBA diving but that is a sport that requires a partner, which I don't have. : \

Yo, i'd try Airsoft or Paintball. That's fun and it'll get you movin! Ipersonally prefer Airsoft.

Chess does get you out of the house because you have to go to tournaments. Some of the tournaments are 3-day weekend tournaments. I took up scuba even though I did not have a partner in mind. You will be hooking up with other divers once you get open-water certification. A partner is not hard to find at all. There are diving clubs and bulletin boards at dive shops plus you can always hire a very experienced divemaster at the resorts. I can also suggest flying but I don't know if money is an issue. Check out the local flying schools in your area and get on a discovery flight for cheap. You'll know if flying is for you after that. My flying lessons and the flying I did after earning my license truly took me outdoors to far away places, gone for most of the day!

paintball is a good option. i also think RC cars would be fun. for a sport i play flag football. and if i weren't so old i'd do MMA ;)

I thought about RC cars but it doesn't grab me.  One of the reasons why I was considering SCUBA was because I live in the pacific northwest and Jacques Cousteau said that it has the best diving in the world.  However, Harley Davidson just put up their 2008 models on their site and I'm pretty sure that I'm just going to by the new Softail Rocker.  It's the bike that I've been waiting for and this way I can go to Sturges and not feel like a poser. :D

I am a daily rider so you will definitely get my support for motorcycling as a hobby for you to get out of the house. I really enjoy motorcycle camping trips for weekend getaways and you may enjoy that also. By the way, you don't need a Harley to go to Stugis. You may want to rethink about a Softail for long distance riding unless you plan on trailering it (poser). I've ridden a Dyna (close to Softail) and in my opinion you will be better off with 4 or 6 cylinders for long distance riding. What am I riding now? Kawasaki Concours.

Muscle Cars! I bought a 1979 Ford Ranchero 500 and just having it makes you want to get out of the house to show it off.  You can also do a lot of customizing work to it such as building up the motor, etc. If you have no mechanical skills, an old pre-computerized car can be the perfect introduction to learning automotive repair (since there is very little that can be screwed up while learning how to fix the vehicle). I used to be into motocycles, but San Francisco has too many crazy drivers and since I play guitar for a living, I cannot afford to fall off and break an arm. I like the RC Car idea. Although I know someone who put about $2,000.00 into one of his RC Cars. That's the cost of a real used car!

You do realize that this type of chess is rehearsed, though, don't you? You're not actually playing chess when you do this. It's more like a play with the chess board as the setting. Fun stuff, though. I used to do the Miami Faire. We even performed a chess game of this type at the grand opening of the World Chess Hall of Fame in Miami. We performed Morphy's famous opera house game (which was the same game we were using at the Miami Faire that year).

What Faire is that from? That wooden board looks familiar, though I don't recognize the people or costumes. Most Ren chess around here doesn't use a wooden board like that - they just paint the grass to make squares. The board we used the first few years I was with the Miami group looked just like the one in that pic, but it was getting old and rotting, so we made a new one which had a dark red border and slightly smaller squares.

As for hobbies, have you considered juggling? I'm sure there must be a juggling group in the Seattle area you could hang out with. There's also bowling, as others have mentioned, or maybe pool (billiards) or darts, if that's more your style. I like darts the best, as far as games to play while drinking beer. :)

Not that I'm biased or anything, but my old sport rowing is one of the best forms of exercise you can get. It's a great way to meet new people, it'll get you fit, and it really is the ultimate team sport. All good rowing clubs have a good novice section where you learn the basics with people of the same level. Once you've begun to master the (initially very difficult) technique and learn how to sit the boat as a crew, you'll be hooked!

And I just did a quick google, and there's plenty of clubs in Seattle, so no excuse!

PS...your wife will love you for it... ;-)

Bounty hunter?

Some of those bail jumpers can end up in rather exotic locations before you finally chase them down.

Just a thought.

I bowl every monday night and I really only do it because it gets me out of the house.  Bowling for 8 months gets tiring. :(

I did get a new motorcyle though. :D  A 2001 Honda Nighthawk CB750.  This was definitely the way to go.  I've been out on a number of rides and it is a blast.  In a couple years I'll have the money to sink into some kind of tricked out cruiser but until then this will do nicely. :D

I enjoy hill walking, it helps to clear my head and keeps me fit. And more importantly it gets me outdoors. And if you have a partner ( i ain't at the moment ) they love it too, wink wink, nudge nudge!

Running, man.  If you live in Seattle, you're in a great city for it.  Try green lake.  Set a goal to run around the lake without stopping.  Always start in the same place.  This way, you can see your progress.

Once you start, it's addicting.  It's great for your body, spirit, and mood.  Probably the best thing you can do is sign up for a 5k race and start training.
