Becoming a game studio would be a massive fumble. They make so much money off of having all of their games exclusive. Besides, the switch 2 will definitely be much stronger than the original one, that was 2017. They also have more handheld competition.

That's true. Admittedly there's a lot of hearsay about it right now, so it still could be great. I'm just spitballing based on the trailer, which revealed a mario kart that looks very similar in graphical intensity to mk8. There could be a huge leap in performance who knows. As for handheld competition, the only safe competitor to Nintendo from their legal wrath is the steam deck as that's basically the only handheld right now with modern power that doesn't explicitly encourage using it primarily for emulation. And it is a very good device, but with the size and weight, not to mention the pretty small battery life, it's not really a competitor to the switch, it's targeting a different demographic. That leaves handhelds specifically designed for emulation from companies like AYN, AYANEO and Retroid, all of which would be very vulnerable to lawsuits from big N if they felt like it for encouraging emulation of their systems (including switch)

Nintendo is in a position where the devices that are significantly better than it in the handheld space (of which I believe there's a few) will never have even close to the same level of exposure in the public eye, because Nintendo's been around longer. Many people don't know that stuff like Switch Online is a rip off because they aren't as technically inclined and so don't understand that most of the services Nintendo is charging 20-100 bucks a year for have been available for free in a better form for years now. They take advantage of the fact that most of their buyers don't understand the actual value of their services by acting as though they are the only option, trying to sweep unofficial competition under the rug with lawsuits and takedowns. That's probably my biggest issue with modern day Nintendo.

I don't think MK9 would be the best way to show the graphical power of the switch considering that it's a cartoonish game. I also don't think Nintendo is super interested in emulation.

Also, I'm not sure becoming a game studio would be that bad. They would still make a killing off of the game sales, even more so by hosting them on multiple platforms. Add in their controllers, as well as the audience of people pirating games to avoid having to pay for a switch, and I think they would do very similarly, while having a much better public reputation than currently

They do not attack competition that doesn't break any copyright laws. They don't seem very interested in fighting other game companies. Nintendo online is cheap but does suck. Hopefully they fix that.

They're only interested in it because they don't want people to be doing it on unofficial hardware. So they lazily scrap together their own and then attempt to shut down the fan ones so that they are the only service left.

Yuzu never broke copyright laws. They never endorsed piracy of any kind. Nintendo sued them solely for emulating a current gen system and they won. Ryujinx as well more recently was shut down.

They would have to conform all of their games to fit other consoles, and their switch sales would tank when you can play the next Zelda on a playstation. Nintendo will lose console sales and their exclusive identity.

Avatar of APersonWhoYoyos

They tried to use the loss of console sales as an argument despite the fact Sony used the same argument way back when sueing Connectix way back in the PS era, and lost

Yuzu ad Ryujinz let you play/steal Nintendo games for free on different devices. You can't do that.

No that's wrong. It is legal to play games on unofficial hardware, including current generation games, provided you actually own the game. There are tools to dump actual cartridges as rom files for personal use in emulators. That is not illegal.

Avatar of APersonWhoYoyos

Piracy is illegal, but it being possible does not give Nintendo the right to shut down emulators. They would have to be actively encouraging it.

Avatar of APersonWhoYoyos

Nintendo officials reportedly even showed up at the lead ryujinx dev's house to tell him to shut the project down which is just plain crazy

Those emulators gave away Nintendo's software to players for free. That can't be legal

You clearly don't understand what an emulator is, which is ok, but next time maybe research such claims first.

An emulator is not pirated Nintendo software and has none of Nintendo's code. It rather is an approximation, a guess at what background processes they use to run their games. That's why emulators are rarely perfect, it's because they are forced to make assumptions about certain processes with the overall goal of eventually being as accurate to how the games are run on actual hardware. The "software" of emulators is invisible and has no UI, nor any code from Nintendo, which means nothing that is stolen from them. This makes the software that emulators run fully legal.

Avatar of APersonWhoYoyos

You can make an emulator for anything, not just Nintendo systems. Often you have to go down to the mechanical level of the processor in order to get them to work. It's hard stuff. Which makes it baffling that Nintendo doesnt hire the devs who work on emulators

I see, fair enough.
