It's been tried before and hasn't really worked. To be fair, most OTF members have scattered to various clubs across the site anyway.
OTF Secession?
It's been tried before (Do any of these clubs still exist [i.e., haven't been disabled/deleted]? I'd be interested to see them.) and hasn't really worked (I suppose that's probably to be expected). To be fair, most OTF members have scattered to various clubs across the site anyway (True, but a unified club would be quite nice).
Ill join a club
Which one? https://www.chess.com/forum/category/clubs-and-teams
I'm thinking public to view, but private to join, so newgens can watch the shepherds work, but they can't lead the sheep themselves, so to speak. If they manage to contribute at least somewhat on actual OTF, they'll be allowed into the club.

cant wait to watch them cook from behind the velvet rope.

I'd imagine that after a while, actual OTF and this club would forget about each other and form seperate communities. It'll be like promoting a seperate community for them.
Is that what you're trying to do?

That's possible, but that's not a goal... what I'm hoping is that "applicants" (for lack of a better word) will be popping up often enough to keep some kind of intercommunication alive and at least keep culture on par. (Also, even people who join the club may still also use the forums for a while anyway, just out of habit).
#14 LordOTheFries, if I may say something, ive been on otf for around 4 or 5 months now and so I think its time I get some recognition around here. I have done nearly as much as you have that I've noticed, so this is silly that I shouldn't be in the club if anyone else can. That's all

I did a quick look to see what I could find.
This club (the link will be below) was an attempt at creating a club as an alternative to forums with better discussion. The reason it failed I’d say because there just weren’t enough good contributors to make the club worth it.
Rev created an off-topic club in 2023 (or maybe early 2024 — I forgot) that was mildly successful, but turned more into a debate club so that politics and religion could be discussed.
Count me in!

I'd think the 'applicants' would still need to be fairly active on here anyway.
Say I'm someone in the future who's well acquainted with the OTFers of my time (the future). I see some people that pop in occasionally (us), and I learn that they were originally OTFers would migrated to another club. I'm not sure if we would appeal to them, as they already have their own OTF community that they're a part of.
That being said, perhaps that could be a good thing, I'm not sure.
I'm not going to give a lengthy intro discussing all the ills of the current OTF, firstly because I'm pressed for time, and secondly because I don't think it's necessary. We know what's going on, we detest the spammers, the trolls, etc. So I'll get straight to my point.
What we may need to do- and I have suggested this before -is leave OTF altogether- or, at least, leave the Forum for OTF -and replant the community into a new club. That's it. Just pack up our bags, and move. The main good thing about a club is that access to it can be restricted. Admins can choose whether or not to allow members in. Which means that newgens can be filtered by how helpful they are! It's that easy! And if we misevaluate and a bad seed comes in...
Just chuck him!
"But wait, surely there's a drawba-"
There isn't.
"Don't some people oppose cl-"
Yes, but if they don't want to join the club, they don't have to! If they're a "big" OTFer, we're still capable of interacting with them on the main forums, DMs, etc. while still using the hypothetical club.
"What about Idi-"
Hackers are a problem in main forums too. At worst a super admin gets hijacked and the club is briefly thrown into a state of confusion before the hacker gets banned. Even if the club is completely and utterly destroyed... we just make a new club to replace it!
"Wouldn't it just be easier to clean up the main fo-"
Shut it. For one thing, it's probably not easier, especially if we get pushback from the mods for not being welcoming to new people or something along those lines.
I rest my case. Any thoughts?
(Edit: Please don't ask if you're a "good" newgen here. The main thing that matters is not spamming and not being a troll. If you on average create less than 3 threads per week and don't regebait everybody you see, the odds are extremely likely that you're fine.)
