So, you didn't get anything you want at Alice's restaurant?
Not quite everything, anyway.

Sure is hard to pick a favorite 🤔 I liked a few of them for different reasons, but the one that left the biggest impression was Odetta’s version. She plays it with a different rhythm altogether which combined with her singing gives it a little bit of swagger. I don’t picture itinerant farm workers as swaggering types though, so there’s some disjunction there for me.
Odetta follows the beat of her own drum. I don't think she's for everyone but she's nonetheless a powerful voice.
I was at the Guthrie Theatre Minneapolis in early 70's when Odetta backing off stage tripped on a mic cable and fell back unto the stage to the collective gasp of we the viewers. she got up, continued backstage, and after a break came out and delivered another mighty fine set. Dylan credits an Odetta recording to swaying his attention to the acoustic guitar and folksinging

I saw a diner just off the highway once, named Alice's Restaurant. So on a lark, I went in.
Was disappointing. Besides a small pic of Alro Guthrie by the cash register, there was nothing to tie the place, into the song.
There was no Group W bench. No 32 glossy color photos. No bars on the windows.
Their turkey dinner could sure be beat. Kitchen wasn't cordoned off, like a crime scene.
Waitrees didn't even know Arlos name. Was just "That guy who sang the song."
