It's not "Space" by Stephen Baxter, is it ? That has alien contact, a Japanese woman who lives a very long time, a wave of colonisation and a teleportation system (as opposed to time-travel) that has a side effect on humans.

Did your book involve a man travelling out to beyond the edge of the solar system ? Was the side-effect a loss of the sense of touch ? Does neanderthals on Io mean anything to you ? If so, I think that's your book. If not, it's a good book anyway!
