Abandon Timer is Flawed
I am playing chess on my phone, winning, with 6 minutes on the clock. Someone walks up to me and asks for directions. I turn off my phone for one minute and the game makes me lose. Or I'm on the bus, in a similar situation and temporarily lose connection One minute later, when I have regained cell signal, I have lost due to "abandoning" the game. Meanwhile, other players intentionally or negligently leave their tabs and phones open instead of resigning because they are too lazy or spiteful after losing material. How is this fair or logical?
That's likely being seen as a disconnect. How much time you have to reconnect depends on the time control and the evaluation of the position.

It's lag compensation and/or you're seeing high lag yourself and/or disconnects.
