abandonment too fast

On more than one occasion, I will leave the app for about 5 to 6 seconds to look at a message or otherwise respond to something, and I will come back and I will be instantly abandoned from the match.
When I say 5 to 6 seconds it might sound like I'm exaggerating but it really is that fast. Conversely, sometimes I'll be sitting there and my opponent will get a abandonment timer, it will always start at like I don't know. is it 25 seconds or something? I mean it's not long but it's longer than what I get.
Maybe I'm misunderstanding something - can anyone help and if not this should be something that is looked at by the dev team.

I believe leaving the app during a game is automatically considered abandonment
