Harassment by a homophobic and aggressive player

Sort:

How is it possible that I have denounced many times the harassment I receive from this player, we have been playing for months and he keeps sending me homophobic and violent messages.

I try to answer him with humor but it really doesn't help to report him? I have to block him and let him continue to bother other users and sow hatred?

I don't understand chess.com

Yes, I have reported it for months many times and it is useless, at least as far as I know, chess.com takes a long time to review these cases or does not review them at all.

It could be he just enjoys your attention... "a kiss with a fist is better than none". Report him. Block him. Forget him.

CabayitoSalvaje

The user does not bother me, I will not block him after all is like listening to a dog barking ... What bothers me is the passivity of Chess.com that takes the money and does not moderate for what is seen

mjtcan

if you won't block him you really can't complain

CabayitoSalvaje

Do I have to block him so Chess.com can do its moderation work? I've already reported him multiple times for over two months.

if he's actually a problem block him, if he's not then you don't have anything to complain about. I don't see the issue.

MrChatty

Chess.com does moderate but no as quick as you would like it to happen

They cant pre-moderate millions of chats

HeckinSprout

So this has been going on for months, but you won't block him. Instead you want chess.com to close his account - which would result in the same thing as you blocking him in the first place. You wouldn't have to deal with him anymore, but it seems like you enjoy dealing with him.. so....?

I'm not sure if there's an algorithm out there that automatically scans the website for this kind of stuff and bans them, but if there is, you are undoubtedly confusing it.

There's plenty of nice people here that you can enjoy playing chess with. This guy isn't running a monopoly. There are much higher quality people for you to choose from.

I think that chess.com has a great laziness with respect to moderating, we are in 2025 programming has advanced a lot and from my experience in other games and other platforms is much better. it is not acceptable that a case as exaggerated as this takes so long. It is an absolute laziness of chess.com. try to put something like this on Steam, lichess or any decent platform with millions of messages, they will act much sooner.

Don't get the high road confused with your high horse.

RyanZ_MD

Nonsense. Moderators have to strike a balance, not always easy, and mistakes do happen, between moderating too much and moderating too little. It's fine to disagree with their decisions or the overall moderation policy, but it's seldom black and white. So insults, calling them lazy, etc., is unhelpful and inappropriate. They are people, just like you, trying to do a good job (and a thankless one, almost 100% so). And your implication that they don't care, that they moderate less aggressively than they should doesn't at all match up with the reality, and the evidence against it is plain and easily seen: threads are often locked, for example, or deleted, comments are edited or removed, players muted or banned... because of perceived abuse. You are, no doubt, more peevish, more thin-skinned than many and, like the OP, want to see the moderators flex their muscles even more. Me? If anything, I would like them to allow us a little more leeway to deal with each other on our own, though I think it's correct for a chess site to disallow topics like politics and religion, for example, and hate speech, very certainly, or discussions of cheating. Who isn't tired of flame wars?

Again, it's a tough job and you're not going to please everyone no matter what you do. You, or the OP, would not make the same decisions they make or that I might make? So what?

Regarding private chat, the situation is even more clear. The OP has no legitimate complaint. He chooses to interact with the person he says offends him, bullies him, chooses. I suggested the offending party might just be after attention but it's just as likely, it soon became clear, that the OP fits that bill, as evidenced by this very thread. I don't really know and don't much care. He needs to report the report then abuse then leave in the hands of moderators, not start a crusade... he needs t9 dropmit, forget about it and move on. Could anything be more clear?

just a note: If someone starts a fight with me in a private chat, I'll deal with it myself, thank you, no need to involve anyone else. If nothing else... they'll get blocked and muted, not another thought wasted. Adios, muchacha.

Nobody cares.

Block, report, and move on with your life. Turn off chat if you don't like verbal harassment.

I'm not sure why this is so difficult to understand.

The forum is moderated well by hankd, they can certainly handle that volume. I'm not complaining about the people who moderate it, it's more of an investment in the platform. It could be automated if they put a little interest into it. I really think it's unacceptable that in a chat with certain words, sanctions aren't issued more quickly, which makes me wonder what else they'll leave out...

TheMidnightExpress12

Its a regular occurrence
