Quoting Rules Need To Be Changed!

Chess.com needs to change the rules about quoting people.

There was a MAJOR problem in May 2018 where I got framed by another user adding text and claiming I posted in.

NOW, the fact that you can delete parts of a quote, completely changing the context of the message, is another issue!

If you are going to allow quoting - DISABLE ALL MODIFICATIONS - ADD, CHANGE, AND DELETE!

Otherwise, I will redact quotes to the demise of anybody that redacts mine!

Example:

He gave a party to the 4th grade kids with guest celebrity Elton John.  Each kid got a goody package with a blow pop and bubble gum.  It was a job well done!

This message can be redacted down to a message that nobody wants to see and would imply that I made an inappropriate, dirty post that is also probably not true about him.  This is why this functionality MUST BE FIXED!

I reported him earlier this week.

You hear anything back?

(I had to modify the example as the admins will say I am targeting a specific user if I left it as it was.)

Most things i have reported, I have heard back with 2-3 days.  This?  Nothing yet.  I get he is a long time member, but their is something wrong with that guy.  He has misquoted me, accused me of things i havent said/posted.  I will give it some time.

I am going to send one too.  Hopefully multiple of the same complaint gets something across to them!

Sent it!  Full detail and everything about the problems and how ignoring is not enough as people like you and I are being mis-represented on the forums!

He is now accusing you of threats and coercion.

Did you get a response as well SoupTime4?  I just did, and went to where his BS was - Posts removed!  Makes you wonder if it was just that thread or if mutation occurred!

Being able to delete parts of a quote is totally unfair and ridiculous. I didn't know this was possible to do in the CC forums although I know the media has been doing this for years. 

Sometimes it makes sense to edit quotes for clarity, but changing the actual content to make it say something it didn't say originally is probably something that will get a poster in trouble, especially if it is in bad faith or objectionable in nature.

Even simple deletion changes context.  Take the following as an example:

Playing 100 games and intentionally losing against ThrillerFan can be really unethical and get your account closed.

Now, here's how you set the quote - THIS is what he was doing:

So the original message is telling another user that matching the same player 100 times and then throwing the game (it's not in my own power to keep him from resigning, and if he's taking my seeks from the seek list, how can I stop him - not all matchups are "acceptances of offers"?) is unethical and could get his account closed.

The souped up message sounds like I myself am just a flat out unethical person!

And then he (Kindaspongey) puts in a post that replies to the "abbreviated" text that has a totally different context, but then when you do it to him, it's wrong, but he does it to you, it's perfectly fine!  That's the problem with it!

Yes. He is that very annoying guy who always loads forums with links and quotes rather than giving more meaningful, personalized input.

I dont necessarily think kindaspongey is a troll.  I do think he does ruin peoples posts by spamming them with links, accusations that are not true, and editing quotes that cause them to have a different meaning than what they were originally.

Yep, and we told him multiple times, over and over again, SoupTime4 and myself, that we were reporting him if he kept the BS up.  Well, she reported him early in the week.  I reported him either Thursday or Friday, not sure which, and I guess it was the multiple complaints that got him!

All we told him was to do what I did here.  I quoted SoupTime4, but notice I quoted her entire post, so as not to doctor up the meaning or context of her message.  That's the other thing, and we said this to him, even if you don't modify the meaning, modifying the context is enough to mislead.

Also, what pushed me over the edge was he would start taking portions of posts from one thread, copying and pasting to another thread, and saying "ThrillerFan said: Blah Blah Blah", where the Blah Blah Blah was completely out of context.  It was a sub-portion of the entire message, but the entire message was, if I recall correctly, a 3 paragraph message explaining the why behind something, with the middle paragraph being the "negative" part of the message, which I seem to recall being an example and not an actuality, and then he copies just that negative paragraph to make it sound like an actuality.

I could be off as it has been a while and I didn't try to piecemeal the situation back together, but there is a prime example where the paragraph meaning is not different, but the entire context of the message is night and day different, and this is what we told him was not acceptable, and I have a gut feeling that what got him muted was the fact that I brought up this concept of him copying messages from other threads, preceding it with "Thrillerfan said", and only copying a portion of it to completely change the context, and anybody that reads it will have no idea where to go to actually see what was actually said, and that it paints a really bad picture of me when it wasn't at all what I said.

So if you are going to quote people, and especially SoupTime4 or myself, simply do like I did here, click on Quote, and leave it at that!  Do not modify what is in the gray, and reply in the White!

Also, whatever you do, DO NOT carry across threads!

Sorry to read that you've been a victim...but I do see some issues with your complaint.

First of all. In this day and time on any forum...you need to be a little thick skinned. People get behind the keyboard and turn into Mr. Hyde...Trolling is popular.

Your initial request to have the quote system fixed is valid to a point.
How can any system prevent something like this...

ThrillerFan said,"...So if people are going to quote...". So you see, In this sentence I misquoted you without using the "quote" menu item. So fixing the functionality is not going to fix the problem.

Banning a person is not going to fix the problem...they just come back as someone else. It frustrating I know...but just ignoring something can go a long way...IMO.

Yea, but if you ignore it they can take something out of context or change it to something worse. People would report you then, you CAN'T ignore it.
