3 Repeatitions

Hi all,

I am just curious why our chess.com doesn't have the 3 fold repeatition rule. I just played a game where I got to the point that I trapped the king and got more than 3 fold repeation, but it didn't end up in a draw. The rules of chess clearly dictates that...or am I totally wrong?

Thanks for any feedback.

It must be claimed, just as in otb.

b3hdad

excuse my ignorance...what is otb?

I assume you mean I have to click the draw button? what if the other player doesn't accept it?

GatheredDust

OTB is an acronym for over the board a.k.a. playing in real life.

Yes, you do click the draw button, but there is no "other player not accepting"; if it's 3-fold repetition, it should draw automatically when you click the button.

birdbirdbird

i think the button should change from "draw" to "claim draw"... if i remember correctly.

Ben_Dubuque

even if they dont accept because they dont believe you just comment in the chat box saying why most people are courteous and will accept then unless they have no idea what you mean, then just simplify it to a king and bishop v king and knight and say not enough material and then draw

Oh, thank you. So I should have claimed it but I thought it will automatically do it. Because playing with fritz/rybka, it will automatically does that. It would have been nice if it was similar.

Yes, of-course, but because the game was timed and I didn't have time to convince/converse with the other player, I was trying to get the draw by using the pre-move option and force my way through.

Others prefer the site to continue to follow, as closely as possible, the laws of chess.

"9.2 The game is drawn upon a correct claim by the player having the move, when the same position, for at least the third time (not necessarily by a repetition of moves)".

No need to convince an opponent as you would be wrong. A correct claim requires no input from your opponent.

Premove or conditional move from your opponent incorrectly, does not allow you to claim as the site requires you to claim after your turn and before your opponent moves.

Either player can claim the draw, when you're playing fritz/rybka, your opponent (the engine) is claiming the draw. So, chess.com does behave the same, it's your opponent who is behaving differently.
