https://www.chess.com/forum/view/community/my-home-page

HOW did you remove it?

He's installed an adblocker like adblock plus or Ublock origin (my personal favourite) and then merely right-clicked on the offending element and created a rule to block it (automagically).

Of course, all and sundry now running to adblockers in order to have a home page display as they would like...well, talk about the site owners shooting themselves in the foot, lol.

Personally, as a paying member, I'd like to see the ADVERTISEMENT on the front Home page removed.  Yes, if I click the 'X' once, it does go away.  But, why do I need to see this in the first place?

Another, OLD issue brought up Long, long ago... and still an issue today as others have mentioned, repeatedly -- forum/post-width. V2 has wider columns than V3, hence, V2 requires less scrolling.

I bet someone could get a "Keep on Scrollin'" theme song going to the "Keep on Rolling" b/g music of REO Speedwagon for V3.

Daily 960 games do not have a default "Let's Play" entry for game title like other normal chess games have.

Hi, there,

i am not sure what all this is about, but i know that i enjoy playing game on Chess.com and the web site developers are doing a great job.

There are always some people who are always afraid of new things and innovations.

We are chess players, what are you afraid of?

Once again, thanks a lot to the webpage designers and developers, great work and keep it up.

Cheers and happy new year happy.png

I don't know man, if you showed me those 2 screenshots with no reference to V2 or V3, I'd say that the first one causes more eye strain and is more distracting.

Yeah, that page does have more white space. You can't skin the forum background and v2 includes more text to fill it in some. I liked the descriptions but don't think the layout is any worse in one than the other.

Commander_Riker

@ thewoefulking  Your V2 image is using the theme creator in V2 which is no longer available. Your V3 layout is a lot different then mine. I guess because your a basic member paid members have a different layout without ads. My Home page is below ??

If your target is to make V3 look similar to V2 then it should be easy for you to understand why all these people prefer the originalCool

okay?

but the problem does not lie in the layout only

we have analysed this

Sure I understand and I'm doing the best with what we have to work with. I really have no complaints with my current layout. There are still issues being worked on but the Theme Customization that V2 had was announced about 2 years ago that would not be in V3 so that is the reason for the white backgrounds.  I have no idea what is involved in making the pane's background a different color or shade. We will have to wait for any comments by Staff about backgrounds ?? Cheers and Happy Holidays to all

Kudos for trying, Martin.  But, you're almost right.  And, I was partially wrong---I was looking at the Vote Chess screen when I made my former comment (with screen capture showing how V3's larger font caused more line-breaks and, hence, increased page size).  I should have been more thorough in my assessment.  So, this time, I am.

The width is shorter, in places, on V3.  But, the main culprit is the font.  V3 uses a sans serif font which uses more space.  V2 uses Trebuchet MS, which packs more tightly.  See Gambit-man's proliferous use of the word, 'clicks'.

Instead, look at the total depth of a page.  I have a couple of samples for you.  Aside from V3 using separate panes, which makes it harder to compare apples-to-apples (or panes-to-panes), V2 is typically shorter for the same content sizes.  This forum, e.g., is ~2/3rds an inch shorter in V2 than in V3.  If some Vote Chess sections get too long, the difference becomes more dramatic.

"2/3rds an inch??? Big Wheel...", you say?

This page here, in V2, Top-to-Bottom is: 5445- pixels deep in my Firefox browser.  In V3 - 5689 pixels down to the bottom.

To scroll from Top-to-Bottom with my mouse wheel: 14 rotations in V2In V3 - 16.  One mouse wheel click defaults to 48 pixels, so I'm traversing ~7-8 wheel-ticks per finger roll movement.  If you're like me and you're on a laptop 4,000 hours a day, the fewer the wheel motions or the less click-side-bar and drag movements, the better.

Martin_Stahl

Yeah, pages are longer and font choice may play a part, even if they are the same size. I'll look some more on that part. Maybe there is some extra verticle padding playing into it.

I can see it being more of a pain on a smaller screen. Messages get me on mobile in that aspect. Kind of wish for reverse ordering the because of that.

JustADude80

Yguys keep proving what I said before. If you know a lot of tricks and secret button locations and take lessons and practice you can make v3 almost as good as v2.  Undecided

JustADude80

Wow. In the straw poll v2 is winning big:

http://www.strawpoll.me/11933585/r

105 votes for v2, 70 for v3 and 12 for I don't care.

So Martin, tell us one more time about how people didn't like v2 when it first came out.

Many didn't. Go back and read the topic I linked. It is almost as long as this one. It was one of many similar ones, but the longest, since it was started by erik. But, you won't, because to you, it means nothing.

Also, it would be easy to game that poll. Not saying that has been done, on either side, but possible.

Can you repeat the link Martin? I missed the other one

Here is another shorter topic about it.

https://www.chess.com/forum/view/help-support/bring-back-the-old-look

There were a number of similar topics. A lot of people didn't like it and wanted the old design back. Similar shades of today and many of the same arguments were made.
