Why So Long? Ugh.

I entered the King's Indian tournament which started today.  I have 10 games going I thing.  One move was made in each of them then ALL 10 logged off.

One move every three days and by the time this tourney is finished it will be a year from now.  If someone goes on vacation (which will HAVE to happen) this will drag out forever.  I thought today in each game we might get 5 or 10 moves in.  Nope in every game, just one move.  And in none of them is it my move.

I will be getting my pension before this is over.  Tourneys should be 1 day affairs in my opinion

Good advice.  How do you know, at the 1000 to 1200 level they are not cheating and using a computer or something?

You know they're not cheating *because* they're at the 1000-1200 level.  ;)

because their rating is only 1000 -1200. Be more suspicious of higher rated (2000+) players! But not all, most are just damned good players.

To minimize the issue avoid tournaments where the Time/Move setting is not used. This means no official site tournaments except the "Quick" version with "Max Avg Time/Move: 3 hours".

You can keep to the smaller tournaments. One round, both games played at the same time and of course Time/Move setting used. The fewer the number of players the lower the probability of players going on vacation.

then perhaps he/she should learn to read!!

That was unnecessary -- and unkind.  Perfect Gent? I read 3 days.  I have played several "3 day games".  Generally what happens is you play 5 or 10 moves and log off.   A day or two later, another 5 to 10 moves, and a day or two later it is over.

I have looked at the standing.  Some have won 3 games already.  I see it this way, 3 days is the MAXIMUM if you get tied up at work, etc.  But not the minimum.

It has picked up some since I made my first post -- which I was complaining, but not really about the tournament but how some people will drag their feet for reasons unknown to me.

I was rated about 900 when I entered the tournament.  Then in 3 days or so I won a few games and move up to 1020 and moved up a bracket.  Probably in over my head a bit.

I wanted to play some games to learn, not to win the tournament.  But if 3 days go by, you can easily forget your strategy and have to play it OTB.

I guess I expected to be more like 3 day games I have played.  I can read and to suggest otherwise was rude.  I listed my expectations, and thanked people for honest replies.

Some people drag their feet in tournaments, and some look for posts to snarl at I guess.

If there is one improvement I would like to see is in a big tournament, the first two or so rounds are 1 move/day affairs then back off to 3 day.  Get it really going and then it can settle in.  Yes, I read TadDude's post where that currently is not possible -- just a thought.

Well, if might have been nicer to not insult other players.  I looked at last year's tournament.   It started Sept 2, 2008 and is only 98% complete.  And obviously I can read, so it was an insult.

You could have said instead, they take a long time, get used to it -- like Kepler said.  No, a Perfect Gent instead gave a Perfect Insult.  You did so, no matter how much you deny it, it was an insult.  Wish it away, justify it, whatever toots your horn.

I am paying $12 a month to play here.  Guess what?  If I get insulted every time, I will not do so.  It will not hurt you -- but eventually what Chess.com will have left is a bunch of jerks.

I am a USCF member.  I play on their site and get killed (good players there).  But it is better than getting insulted.

Quite frankly, instead of justifying and unjustifiable position, you should really apologize -- if you were a Gentleman.

JollyPlayer- The rules state they have 3 days. And that is that.

Oh, I agree.  I really should not have spouted off until the tourney got more underway.  Looking at the standings, some have 8 or so games finished.  I have finished with two opponents, both nice and both wanting to play.  I resigned in one after 52 moves!

I wish people would quit with the "reading part".  It is degrading if not insulting.  Playing 3 day chess with other opponents has never been this slow.  I read it - I just expected it to be more like that than players taking all 3 days ranked under 1200 -  like getting their GM was on the line.

Thats all.  Tournament Chess people play slower (and still make the same blunders) than in normal 3 day chess.  If I had to say it again, that is how I would put it.

JollyPlayer, more flexible time controls is at the top of my wish list. However, that is out of our hands. What I suggest is that you run your own tournament. Under advanced options, set player speed to fast or very fast. Also, use a low timeout percentage and a higher completed game requirement than the default.

I have thought about running my own tourney.   This will probably be the last "large" tourney I enter.  I have 3 players (6 games) left in my bracket.  6 moves is the top I believe.  The other two players played 34 to 52 move games (4 of them) and we are done.  I would have to win out to have a chance.

If it didn't affect my rating - and not be fair to the other competitors, I would resign the rest of my games.  One player is half way around the world.  I waited up late, and this player drug it out, about 25 minutes a move when we were only playing each other.  I wanted to get some moves in, but we each got one move in (1 in each game) and I had to go to bed.  I tried to be accommodating, but it was taking way too long.
