Finally!  I just beat a grandmaster, by position as well as time.  It was a 5 minute game.  Of course , c5 and Qxc5 was a mistake (allowing me to fork his queen and king), however, he was already about 10 seconds down with 30 seconds left to go....

I've been playing a lot of chess this last couple weeks.  Here is a game to show off.  Although it's not the highest rated win I've had during this time, it's a nice game.  The interesting thing is I play this line as black as well (h5 in the na...

Here is the first annotated game.  It was played on icc with a 5 minute time control.  The opening went like this:             I played Be2.  Normally you'd see Bc4 or Nc3 from me on this move.  The reason I didn't play Bc4 is that I v...

In an effort to learn more and get better at chess, I'm about to start annotating every chess game I play that is 5 minute or higher.  A wise man once said "Only fools annotate 5 minute chess", however that's what I primarily play and learn from l...

It's been a while since I played on ICC and got my rating up.  However this last week or so I've been playing more.  I finally have a new game to show off against an IM in 5-minute icc:

This one's fresh out of the oven, win against 2155 :)  Woot:)  I got him in a nasty pin early on, but was a little hesitant to pull the trigger.  Some maneuver, a few tactics later, and I came ahead in the fireworks.

Here's a game I won against 2000+ on icc, I think he should have played Rxg7 and Rg8 though to pin (and win) and my bishop , even though it gives back some material.  Instead, I pinned his rook.  :)

Continuing my trend of showing off interesting games or games against high rated players, here is a game I played against a player rated 2111 on ICC 5-minute.  It was pretty sharp, again standard disclaimer: The best moves may not have been play...

I just played this 15 0 game against a 2000+.  It was a really exciting game.  It started out as a najdorf sicilian, and then became extremely complicated.  I was pushing on the kingside, and he was almost checkmating me on the queenside.     I...

Hi, here's another 5-minute game I just played.  This game illustrates how you cannot just play a typical sicilian e6 - g6 on autopilot against the grand prix.  I got a knight on f6, threatened to attack on the a3-f8 diagonal, and black never re...

Here is a 5-minute game i played on icc just now.  I don't know if I should have played Rxh6, but it ended up working out.  My opponent was FM Sergor, who is  FM Sergei Goregliad.  The nice thing about my win was apparently my score against this...

Here's another IM scalp I took.  Truth be told I won on time, but his position isn't really the bees knees either in the final position.  I don't think white will ever lose this position.

Here's a cool game I just played.  There's an instructive moment at the beginning which demonstrates the principles of good and bad trades.     Here is the position:                                              White's knight is under attack....

Today I took 2 IM scalps in 5-minute on ICC.  In the first game, i was doing alright, and actually was an exchange down for a while, but my opponent used a lot of time and I won the game on time.    In the second game, (shown below) I actually ...

Hello to the 40 or so people who read my blogs.     I decided to do a new thing to improve my chess - I'll play 15 minute games (no more 5 minute if I can help it), and then I'll look up the openings of the game, and say what I was thinking dur...

Hi everyone!  I played a tournament last weekend in my home state of Nebraska.  It was a team tournament.  Overall the result for me was pretty poor - I had 2 losses during the event and will probably lose my expert rating status.         On th...

So I played another GM , this time in 5-minute.  It looked like I was giving him a tough time, also he had a lot less time on the clock.  However as the game progressed my "advantage" was neutralized and then he equalized time!  GM's are tough :D ...
