I lost this 30 min game :(

I was very disappointed after losing this game. I discovered that 30|0 was way too fast for me. I decided to continue playing 45|45 games.

To my not-so-utter surprise, I was smothered mate, well, sort of.

Can you provide some tips so that I can analyse and come up with a good move in lesser time?

(If anybody suggests tactics trainer on chess.com/chesstempo.com, I am gonna rip their head off with a Class A machine gun while stabbing them on and on and on.)

Try to activate your dark bishop and A1 rook. Both pieces barely did anything during this game.

7. Bd3. Why exchange your good light bishop for his bad light bishop? (look at the pawn structures).

17. fxe4 was better. It gives you a strong center. You got a 2nd chance at move 18, but still you didn't play it. At this point black has a slight advantage, as he gets the open file.

22. Qb1?? What were you trying? It leaves both e2 and e3 unguarded. White is lost from this point on. You were lucky that black didn't play 23... Ne3 after 22... Qe2+ (although 22...Qe3+ was even stronger for black).

You played rather poor positional chess - indeed, you basically outplayed yourself, selecting the moves and plans that hurt you, rather than your opponent outplaying you.  In other words, tactics only came into play after you voluntarily selected moves leading to a greatly inferior position.  So there is really no reason to suggest tactics trainer/chesstempo based on this particular game.

16. fxe4 (or 17. fxe4 or 18. fxe4) would have been better, giving you a strong center.  Instead, your moves give black control of the efile for free.  All that effort to play e4, and what has it done for you?  Gave black control of the efile, thats what.  Also, do you know what an isolated pawn is, because you dont seem to be using the term correctly in your comment.

Your position is already greatly inferior, but 22. qb1 is an obviously terrible move seeding total control of the file to black.  While 23. ... ne3 wins, the issue is learning to not make moves like qb1 instinctively, so its not even something you would do in speed chess.

How?  Well, asking for advice on your games is a good step.  Expert teachers like Jeremy Sillman generally recommend going over a ton of gm games as well.  Sillman himself has many books that could help.

There is more to learn from this game, but these are two of the key spots.

Hey, have you tried the tactics trainer on 365chess.com? just kidding. On the serious note your biggest mistake was 22. Qb1. Moving your queen from the center to the corner of the board while your opponent has an open file next to your king in not a good idea. 16 or 17 or 18 fxe4 to me loooks better than your version, because one of those two connected pawns will become a passer. And advancing those pawns would have given you a solid strategic plan to follow to the end game. After move 18 you lost all initiative and just reacted to your opponents moves.

Thank you all for tips!
