Thread Bumping

Recently i have seen some people going back to the oldest forum topics on the site and making posts just to bring them back up to page 1. This is called "bumping." It is not a rule, that you can't do this, on this site yet, but what do people think about this?

"It's considered 'bad form' if you keep bumping a thread just to keep it on top. It's like someone interrupting your conversation, even though they don't have anything to say after they get your attention ."

However, quite often, a question gets asked for which a clear answer has been provided in the past. Under those circumstances, I usually quote the nub of the original response, and give a link to the original thread. This sometimes rejuvenates the original thread by - as HotFlow pointed out - introducing it to a new audience.

Interestingly, not only did BUMPing not rank all that high in a not-so-recent survey of Forum Annoyances, there was not even consensus about whether it was annoying or not.

   It's something personally that I hardly ever do, but depends on if I am asking a certain question or waiting for a specific reply and the thread goes into cyber limbo after a week or two and I get no responses, I will bump it. It's better than creating a topic with the same name a week or so down the road.

Though if you're not careful when bumping-old-threads, you can accidentally bump into an unrelated bumping thread - not to mention thread-resurrections.

I think it's annoying when people respond to months-old or even years-old threads and you don't notice the date on posts you reply to.  Then of course someone else has to point out that you replied to a post that was made so long ago.
