[Puzzle Road] Do you still doubt of the power of the Knights? (P12)
Welcome to puzzle road!
With his movement in form of a “L”, the Knight is probably one of the most appreciated pieces by chess players for his capacity of attacking two pieces at the same time. In an endgame, the Bishop is often better, but in the middlegame, the possibilities to win material or a decisive advantage is extremely big!
In this puzzle, we will find a beautiful checkmate, by using our both Knights against the black king! Together, they control many squares of the board and can block the king on the left side and finally force a win for White.
12/ Do you still doubt of the power of the Knights? (Topic: Knight attack)
First move: a4 + (!!)
In this position it’s possible for us to mate in 4 moves! Our two knights are strong positioned on the board and block the black king. We will try to make the final move with the rook, which means we need to make the black king move to the 2nd rank! In the game has been played 1. … / Ka6 (??), followed by 2. Nc5# (!) The “right” move would be 1. … / Kb4.
Second move: c3 + !
By checking the King with a second pawn, we force Black to go on the b3-square. One move more, and he goes on the second rank!
Third move: Knight c5 + (!!)
Indeed, one of our knights is still near of the king, but the other isn’t. That’s why we check with it and continue to make a prison for the king! He’s now on the 2nd rank!
Fourth move: Rook a (or f) c1# !
And easy checkmate in 1 now! GG!
Always use your knights correctly! You can move them on many important squares and if you have the two knights, can capture for example 2 squares, like a5 and a6!
See you tomorrow for the next puzzle!
