Good news, Chessimo HD for iPad released! http://itunes.apple.com/tw/app/id480983124?mt=8
:) So we'd be especially interested if you have an iPad to test with, but given the changes made to the screens to support this (and given that it's a 'universal' app) we're VERY happy if you can test with an iPhone or iPod Touch as well. If you want to get the new app early (bugs and all!) and share your feedback, here's what to do... To get started we need your device ID (or "UDID"). You can generally get that by installing a free app called "ShareAbout" (find it in the App Store), or simply by connecting your device to iTunes like so: 1. Connect your device to your computer 2. Open iTunes and select your device on the left side-bar 3. On the "Summary" screen for your device, you should see a Serial Number field near the top 4. Click on the Serial Number field - it should change to show your UDID! 5. With the UDID displayed (again, not the serial number), go to the iTunes File Menu > Copy Once you've got that number, just email it to me at "deepgreene@chess.com" We'll add it to our next test build and then I'll send you what you need to install the app and get rolling.  Thanks!

Does anyone know of any good chess apps for the ipod touch/iphone. I want one with a strong engine(I would like at least 2600) where I can set up positions, also an openings database or openings book would be nice but not essential. If anyone has any good recommendations could you tell me what strength the engine is.
Hi, are there any news on live chess in the chess app? The last weeks i felt myself drawn to fics because of good apps, but i always liked chess.com more. regards

I wish the buttons for going through the moves of a posted game on an ipad were larger. They are too small for my fingers. If i enlarge the screen, after each move it defaults back to the original size.

I'm use to seeing the status bar on every app. I moded the app to show the status bar for now, but every update wipes it out and i have to redo it. So could it be possible were the status bar is already there?

Hi all. This is an OSX rather than iOS question, but I hope someone can help. Sigma chess doesn't run under Lion. Does anyone know of an alternative GUI currently available. Also, does anyone have any experience of ExaChess as a DB package?

Does anyone one else who plays on an iPad have this problem? It only happens with black whether I'm playing it or not. I deleted it from my multitasking bar and it did nothing, I also did a reboot an it didn't work, and I even re-downloaded the app. Nothing I tried fixed this problem. Does anyone know how to fix this cause it's really confusing in games? My iPad is a 1st gen on 4.3.3 and the app is on version 1.52 if that helps.

Was quite surprised to find an app from Chessbase in the app store this morning. It’s called cb online. It's very simple, 4 icons at the bottom of the screen present you with: Board Statistics Games Players The board allows you to play through an opening to reach a desired opening position. Using the statistics icons allows you to access the statistics for that opening, showing how often and how successful that opening has been. You can also navigate through openings using the statistics option and the position will be there when you go back to the board. When you're ready you can then go to games option to browse a list of games played in that opening. These games can be selected and then played through on the board. The Player icon/option allows you to search for games by player. Looks like it will be a useful tool for researching and refining opening play. Usually, I would have to wait until I can get to my PC to do this i.e. play through a game and then search the database to see how I can tweak an opening and learn from stronger player etc. Very useful if you are working on your repertoire and you want to see what these stronger players went for when you got “out of book”. It is a little basic, however, and I found it quite annoying that I had to go back to the board and replay all moves to the beginning position before I could move onto a new game. A new game or reset option would be welcome so more functionality is required but it is encouraging to see a Chessbase release on iOS. About a year ago, most of the talk I found on forums signalled that Chessbase remained indifferent to the android and iOS markets. Hopefully this marks a shift in thinking. I would love to have more Chessbase facilities on my iPad and Android phone. I envisage that most of the processing and memory power benefits with PC's could simply be outsourced to the cloud. Surely there is no reason why you couldn't have just as sophisticated software on your tablet or smart phone without any loss in performance due to lack of processing power? For instance, imagine sending a game to a Chessbase server to have it returned with full analysis from Rybka in about the same time it takes to analyse a game at home on the PC. If you play in a chess league then you could do this with your opponent in the post mortem. Or, you could analyse your games in-between matches at a tournament. All you would need to have is an internet connection. Perhaps this is an idea for chess.com? P.S. does live chess have a release date yet? I’d venture the opinion that the technology that could exist now will take a long time to come about. This is understandable because many of the more serious chess players (who play in leagues and tournaments and work for Chessbase and other publishing houses) seem to be way behind the times. I take my iPad with me to league games and many people don't even know what it is or what it can do. I’m of the opinion that change will be driven by the likes of Chess.com users and the users of other internet communities who access their subscriptions from their tablets and smart phones and begin to see the benefits for these types of tools.

I'm assuming that none of these iOS apps will be looking that many moves ahead etc so getting a reasonably challenging endgame (on the iPad/iPhone) is going to be a matter of technique (or rather superior programming) but I've noticed that some chess apps are much better than others in the endgame. tChess Pro could definitely do with some work in this area. Shredder seems to be good and I've also rediscovered Chess Genius, which also good. I quite like Chess Genius's "next best move" where you can ask the computer to play what it thought was the next strongest move instead, great for nudging into other variations that you want to play through. Was wondering what experiences others have had with the various apps/engines on the iPad/iPhone out there. I know everyone’s probably got their favourite, how does it stack up in the endgame?

So I had a rather spirited debate with a friend of mine about buying a MacBook Pro and he is ardently against the Mac platform based on the fact that you can't get any decent chess programs for the Mac that are reasonably priced. My arguement was that you can run any Windows program on a Mac in a virtual machine using Parellels or VMware. I would love to here your opinions, especially if you have a Mac and have some experience with this. Thanks

It would be really nice if there was a game explorer for the iPhone/ iPod/ iPad app for chess.com. I use game explorer a lot in my online games and it really helps me but it's kind of hard in the beginning of a new game to decide which move to do without it. It would be kind of cool if you could play vote chess with the app too. I know you can login in to your account by just touching tournaments but then for vote chess you have to zoom in to see the peices and the comments. For the next update, it should definately have these features or at least one of them. Anyone agree?

I've used this app before on the iPod touch and noted that it is now available on the iPad so I thought I'd check it out. At the moment I'm using the Chess.com app for correspondence games and (up until this weekend) iChessPack HD for live games on FICS but I'm always keen to try out a new chess app…For those who haven’t used the app before; Instant Chess essentially finds you a game against online opposition as soon as the app loads (hence the title “Instant”). You literally touch the icon for the app and then you are playing an live game a few moments later (with no settings to go through, no other buttons to touch etc). One major change from the previous version is that you now just get two free games a day so if you want to play more then you will need to pay either £3.95 for a 100 games or sign up for £4.95 a month. I saw that I could charge the 100 games through my iTunes/Apple account so I thought I’d give it a go and I’m glad I did. Of course if you’re only looking to play two online games a day then this wont be a problem but for £3.95 I got to go on the site and set-up my seeks so that now my instant games are always 15min (you can also set opponent lever etc). I can go also to the site and email myself a collection of my games in PGN format. These two features as well as much improved graphics for the iPad provide for a very satisfying live chess experience. iChessPack HD (for FICS) is free (not the app of course but the FICS games) so I suspect that some people wont be able to justify the extra expense, however, I think I am (although I will play out my 100 games and then go from there)! One major improvement over FICS on iChessPack HD is that Instant Chess is much more stable. If you happen to disconnect then you have up to a couple of minutes to re-connect and get back into your game and the app can re-sync clocks etc so you don’t loose any time. Another improvement is the number of games going at any one time, I can post a seek for 15 min rated game on FICS and sometimes wait up to 10 minutes before I get a game (or find one that I’m looking for). Instant Chess is, well, still pretty much instant and setting up the seek on iChessPack HD is a little fiddly! So, if you have an iPad and want to play on a live chess games (instantly, without fuss) then £3.95 (which is the price of a decent iPad App anyway) is probably worth the expense to check it out and see how you get on with it, in my opinion anyway! Otherwise, stick with iChessPack HD for FICS!Ben

My first app has just been released on the App Store. It offers easy ways to load PGN databases and supports text annotations as well as variations. It's absolutely free, so there's no reason to not try it if you've been looking for a PGN viewer that supports variations and annotations! http://itunes.apple.com/us/app/cbase-chess/id386254532 CBase Chess 1.0 CBase Chess is a free PGN database viewer. Cbase Chess supports PGN standards whichs makes bringing your databases from your chess software at home to your iPhone or iPod touch easy! Features: *Games with variations! Supports RAV (Recursive Annotation Variations) for as many variations as your game holds. *Games with commentary annotations. *Opens PGN files from the web! Registers as a PGN reader so you can open your files from a website, or from apps which support document forwarding like Dropbox! *iTunes document support. Add new databases via iTunes. *Player search.
we're starting work on the chess.com iphone app. let's discuss features here! the 3 things i would like to include are: - play against your friends (correspondence-style) - tactics trainer - play computer thoughts?
