Title. I find that even though the bishop is more active on f4 than in systems like the Colle, where the bishop is stuck on the back rank, I feel as if playing the London is just a little too slow for white. Imo, there are a lot of better options for white (and more ambitious) after d4 (Stonewall, Catalan, Colle, Queen's Gambit, Trompowsky, etc). I've found almost an anti-london system with c5 and qb6 (regardless of move order) and I've had really good success against the London with those moves. thoughts?

Played some weird opening, missed a move that would win the game, etc.

My second ever smother mate (my first was yesterday lol) and wanted to share. Somehow I only got 73% accuracy on this, but I thought it was pretty cool.

You play very principled, but you definitely trade too much and don't quite understand the motifs of certain openings yet (which is fine). Do a lot of puzzles and learn some openings and you'll be fine

Despite having a commanding lead over my opponent the entire game, he was what felt like just moments away from checkmating me. I played the fried liver, he played the powerful traxler defense. As you can see, he had me on the ropes all game despite my sizable piece advantage over him. None of my pieces were developed, which made defending very difficult. If it weren’t for his queen blunder, I think he may have checkmated me. The traxler is super powerful! What did my opponent do wrong that prevented him from getting mate earlier?

A question for the more advanced (Catalan) players here, but against 1. d5, how should you still achieve your Catalan setup? Should I play nf3 and g3 first, or should I play c4 and try to go into the Catalan in a Queen's Gambit move order? I've noticed that if I play nf3 first, a lot of people will play nc6 instead of nf6, and if I play c4 first a lot of people will play the Queen's Gambit Accepted and then I can't really go into a Catalan

@B1ZMARK, this one's probably for you; I've been experimenting with the Alekhine, and a lot of the time, people don't push their pawn immediately. What do you suggest if they play something like d3 or Nc3?
Don't listen to clickbait but inferior chess.com engine Proof :
So one day our boy Richard gave a 20 board blindfold simul and won them all. When he went to get up and leave, a little boy spotted his briefcase which he had left behind. The boy went and grabbed it, saying "Mr. Reti, you have left your briefcase behind!" The chess master turned around, took the briefcase, and said, "Thank you, dear boy. I have such a terrible memory!"

What do you like to play against this semi-common opening (at least at my level)? Accepting it seems to be the usual continuation, but after 5. c3 how do you retreat?
Learned this little tip from @B1ZMARK’s previous post my opponent was beating me up pretty good.. then he got greedy and decided to nab some hanging pawns. Opened the door for an easy back-rank mate A good lesson for anyone in a similar position; don’t just grab random pawns when you have your opponent’s king on the run!

when you solidly outplay a lower rated player and grab some pawns for nothing but then you hang a piece and he doesn't blunder it back can we have an f for this poor 2500
Played a series of 7 blitz games against a 1700+ in rapid, and won 3 of them! Pretty proud of my play, too. Even in some of my losses, I felt like I played very well, or at least held my own. Avoided adoption, too! Now I can remain the son of @little_guinea_pig and not be taken away from my home in his basement 😌

Happy April Fools Day! April 1, 2025: “The ability to play chess is the sign of a gentlemen. The ability to play chess well is a sign of a wasted life.” -Paul Morphy, GM. (Do you think he stole this quote from his dad who shamed him into quitting chess?)
