Oh my lord, ashtandrez is so good, it will probably in my top 3 extras.
Oh yeah, good job martinaxo!
Here are the reasons why Ashtandrez is so good.
1. It is not a solved game.
What I mean by a 'solved game' is variants with little strategy (sergeant's checkers) or variants that almost do not utilise fairies (cross derby, infiltration danger) or variants that are too simple (Villagers Chess). Ashtandrez is an unsolved game, a very unexplored one too, so who knows, you can find a decisive trap!
2. The piece placement
This is one of the hardest things whem making a variant. Every piece, even if it is a weak one, has it's use in moth attack and defense, this also means no piece is redundant. There are also no duplicate pieces, which for some reason I love.
3. Relatance to Standard Chess.
It is not another game like Thermopylkae, which I still love, but it isn't even close to standard either. Every orthodox piece is there, and some strategies are still included, and I think that achieves the point of variants VERY well.
4. It is just fun.
With every piece having it's own unique role, it just creates an atmosphere that is really enjoyable. No piece is dull or similar to another, and there is a perfect amount of planning and strategy. I have played almost every extra at least once, and no variants beat the fun of this variant before.
5. It is extremely well made.
Every gamerule, Every piece, Every turn has a use. If i had an year to make a single variant, I am unsure if I can beat Ashtandrez. This is hard to explain, but there is a feeling he took a lot of time into this variant.
In conclusion, I want this variant to get the attention it deserves.
