I thought this one seemed relevant to chess. Anyone got any others? "Intelligence is not to make no mistakes, but quickly to see how to make them good" - Bertolt Brecht

Yesterday I went to Canto Ostinato, a concert for 4 piano's composed by the Dutch composer Simeon ten Holt. Yesterday it was performed by 3 piano's. It's 90 minutes of non stop music. Basic themes repeted en with variations in the style of minimal music. While listening to the music after a while you cannot help but wander off with your thougts. Among others in my mind I went to my chess games. Thinking of positions and moves. Not the best or most reliable way to play chess, but it happend. And after a while the music takes you back to the here and now. Just wanted to share this with you. If you want to get an impression of Canto Ostinato, click on the link below. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JDCsOL2vBJc&t=255s
For over a century, the Oxford English Dictionary had this incorrect definition of syphon: "A pipe or tube of glass, metal or other material, bent so that one leg is longer than the other, and used for drawing off liquids by means of atmospheric pressure, which forces the liquid up the shorter leg and over the bend in the pipe."
Got a favorite chess slogan or phrase that you like? Let's hear it. How about: A knight on the rim is dim. Similar to "A knight on the wall will fall". Others??
My company sent me to Lyon, France for a week for training. I had never been to Europe before. It was a good trip. Well actually the work training did not go so well, but the rest of the trip was great. Lyon is a beautiful city. The old side, often called "Old Lyon" is marvelous. I took some pics, but not lots. I will post some later. I am an American, so when we talk about old places and old buildings, we are talking about 200 or 300 years old. In Lyon there are things much older than that and many buildings are 500 to 600 years old. There are small shops and restaurants everywhere. The women are beautiful. They take time to dress nicely just to go out shopping. Cobblestone streets are common and in Old Lyon you can see the difference in just cobblestone and very old cobblestone. It was very cool. They have a huge opera house, dozens of large cathedrals, museums, statues and fountains. It is a beautiful city. I will never forget it. I met two pleasant young women who were very nice to me. One was sitting beside me on the plane so we have lots of time to talk (an 8 hour flight to be exact). She was from Bulgaria. She was very intellectual - really she was. It was just a good trip.

They had several tropical birds out at the resort I'm staying at.     We saw an awful lot of chickens...     Inside the cave I told you about... It was right next to a really nice beach. It's a small cave, but it's got fossils and interesting rock formations inside.
For Rocky: Thank you for writing part II of the History! After reading that history Part II I feel humble, which is really a relief. Trying to be the smartest person all the time is really stressful, and being humble is a relief from that stress! I am not sure if I missed what they said about higher math functions, or it went over my head. Very possible it went over my head! I think I had a good calc teacher in high school and coasted from there. That is partly why my employment now is mainly just putting wind chimes into boxes. (I remember MindWalk wrote about postmodernism, but I could not really grasp it. Recently I happened to read about The Howl on Wikipedia (by Allen Ginsberg) and I think the article says it was the beginning of postmodernism. But I only thought of that because my mom's friend Melinda had a T-shirt about San Francisco in the Summer of Love, and then I was talking to my dad about it. I warned you this was multifaceted!) Now, I need to switch to my argument with Rocky about whether Christianity is necessary: I still think other religions can be as good as Christianity. But I do not feel sure of it. I have been trying to get around to reading Pense(e with an accent) s by Pascal, to get a better grasp on serious monotheistic religion, where faith and belief are truly part of life. I try to find a relation between the theological concepts and what I see to be physically true. What takes faith is to live sincerely in a community. There are many ways in which religion is distorted and why it can be difficult to connect with religion in a good way. I had an idea at work last week that the inside of a person's head, when the person is living, might be completely different from what we perceive when we look inside with scientific instruments. There might be some kind of wonderful wormhole inside every person's head. Also, do you like the Wrinkle in Time story, where the children have to find their father, and he is trapped frozen in a cylinder, with a giant pulsating brain on a dais, called IT (I think it's ironic it stands for Information Technology, too)? So how many chess.com friends should one have? Not sure if I can explain why, but it seems like a chess.com member should not have friends that they have, and have never had, any interaction with. Why call them a friend if you have never talked to them or played a game against them and probably neve will? I have 47 friends here. I guess 100 or so isn't a lot, but some people have over 1,000. Isn't that too many? Your thoughts?

Hello. I am almost finished with a great book. It is a history of major scientific discoveries. It is called "A Short History of Nearly Everything" by Bill Bryson. http://www.amazon.com/Short-History-Nearly-Everything/dp/0767908171/ref=tmm_hrd_swatch_0?_encoding=UTF8&qid=1438827119&sr=1-1 Wow some of those scientists in the old days were nuts! What have you read that you want to talk about?

Do you use facebook? Do you like facebook? I use facebook (fb) every day. I don't post a lot. I actualy use it as a photo sharing site. I do nature photography and have a group of friends (maybe 40 or so) who do nature photograpy. We all share photos and information about local nature photography on facebook. I see and hear where lots of people do stupid things on facebook. Seems like some people just don't realize how much damage can be done when personal thoughts are written down where not only the whole world can see them, but they can be kept forever. Your thought about fb?
My friends and I play OTB on Tuesday nights at a (sorta) local Mexican restaurant. I say sorta local because it is a long drive for me but local to everyone else. Anyway...... Our Tuessday nights are more casual and fun and social than serious chess. But we do have some fairly serious games - considering all the noise and people and laughing going on. Anyway..... If I get into a close game and it goes long, after an hour or an hour and a half, I am ready to call it a draw even if I think I can win. When I see some good friends sitting around laughing and visiting and I think I can decide to either play that same game another 30-45 minutes and win, or offer a draw and go on over and join the fun, I offer a draw. You got a chess story that doesn't fit anywhere else? Please share them here!

Do any of you play Tactics Trainer here on chess.com? I play it a lot. It is fun but can sometimes be real frustraiting. I guess the most frustraiting thing is when you solve a puzzle correctly but lose points because you were too slow - and sometimes what TT calls too slow isn't real slow. Many times I have correctly solved a puzzle and lost points because I used 40 seconds and the average time is 20 seconds. The other frustraiting thing is when you miss a puzzle and see that the pass rate is 23% or something like that. I have seen some puzzles with a pass rate of 5%! I don't know why they don't rate them higher when the pass rate is real low. However, all things considered, Tactics Trainer is fun. Comments?

Does anyone want to tell us your favorite Classical Music? I really like a couple of overtures from Richard Wagner - Tannhauser and Die Meistersinger von Nuremberg. Anyone else?

Just for fun, tell us about yourself. Give us three numbers: How old are you? How old do you look? How old do you feel? Now we won't ask you to swear to tell the truth, but make it close enough to perhaps, maybe fool somebody.

This one's a favorite of mine but too long for Notes: I was at an Evolution Society conference and sat down for lunch with another scientist. I work in phylogenetics--evolutionary trees--where we are concerned with the way that variation in mutation rate can cause us to infer wrong relationships among species. In particular there's a problem called "long branch attraction" where two species with high mutation rates or high divergence from all other species are erroneously inferred to be related. So, I asked this guy what he was working on and he said that he studied variation in mutation rates along the branches of trees. I nodded, yes, I'm interested in that myself. He then said that long branches were turning out to be a problem. More nods, I get that too. Then he said "Only a very sloppy homeowner lets the branches get that long." --and I suddenly realized that I had not understood a single thing he was saying, because when he said "tree" he meant a big green thing growing in someone's yard, not a diagram of species relationships! He was actually measuring the mutation rate per meter of tree limb, a pretty cool project. So I explained what I'd been thinking and we both had a good laugh.
