In the scope of the PCL Thematic Openings competitions, admins will have to send challenge with pre-defined positions from the Opening Book. To do so, you must start by creating a challenge the usual way and get to the challenge creation page. There, go to the "Game" section, and under "Game Type" select "Book Opening". It will create a new menu below to select which one you want to select. You can now fill the other parameters and send the challenge. Attention at that point: the preview of the challenge will not show the correct position! To verify a challenge you just created or received, you need to go to the old interface. Alternatively, you could accept the challenge and cancel the match if the position is wrong. Here is what the "new" challenge page looks like: click to enlarge And what the "old" one gives: click to enlarge To access to the "old" challenge page, you must add the challenge number (the number at the end of the address of the challenge) to this URL: https://www.chess.com/clubs/match_challenge/ , e.g.https://www.chess.com/clubs/match_challenge/123456 Please comment if you need more clarification.

In the scope of the PCL Thematic Endgames competitions (and possibly other ones), admins will have to send challenge with pre-defined positions from the Opening Book. To do so, you must start by creating a challenge the usual way and get to the challenge creation page. There, go to the "Game" section, and under "Game Type" select "Custom FEN". It will create a new text box below in which you can copy/paste the FEN string you want to load. In our competitions, the FEN will be provided in the competition's dedicated topic. You can now fill the other parameters and send the challenge. Attention at that point: the preview of the challenge will not show the correct position! To verify a challenge you just created or received, you need to go to the old interface. Alternatively, you could accept the challenge and cancel the match if the position is wrong. 1 Description 1.1. The Phoenix Chess League Super Bingo (PCL-SB) is a perpetual competition between chess teams of Chess.com. The games is inspired by traditional games such as the bingo (or loto, lotto, quine, rifle, etc.). Participating teams play matches against each other to try to fill a bingo card assigned to them when they register. Points are scored by winning matches, and bonus points are given for filling the bingo card. 2 Entering the game 2.1. All clubs registered in the Phoenix Chess League can enter the game. 2.2. The list of member clubs is kept in the Club and Admins topic. 2.3. Club willing to enter the game, after they are properly registered in the aforementioned topic, must post in this topic their intention to enter. When the registration is validated by a league director, they will get assigned a bingo card. 3 Bingo cards 3.1. Bingo cards given to each team are a 5 by 5 grid with one joker square and 24 challenge squares. 3.2. Winning a match corresponding to a specific challenge clears the square with that challenge's code. 3.3. Bonus points are earned by clearing full rows, columns and diagonals. 3.4. The joker square counts as an already cleared square. 3.5. A team can ask for a new bingo card once per quarter. Example of an empty bingo card Example bingo card with one row and one column cleared Example of a full bingo card 4 Challenging a team 4.1. Any playing team can challenge at any moment another registered, active team. 4.2. At challenging time, a challenge type shall be chosen and inserted in the Quick Description of the challenge. 4.3. If the challenge type is not specified, it shall be stated when the match is reported in this topic, and explicitly agreed upon by the admins of both teams. 4.4. If the challenge code does not match the match parameters, an agreement shall be found between the admins and the league directors before the match starts to classify the challenge. 4.5. A type of challenge can be used any number of times, even if it's been validated on the bingo card already. That way, no team will be blocked, the only counterpart is you can't get the bonus points. 4.6. Teams can decline incoming challenges without penalty. 4.7. All accepted matches shall be reported in this topic. Matches that are not reported won't be accounted for in the results. 4.8. The challenges shall have the following parameters: Match Parameters: Match Name: PCL Super Bingo [Team A] vs. [Team B] Quick Description: The quick description shall contain the code of the challenge type (see table below) e.g. "Challenge type: C1." Game Type: depends on the challenge type. Days per Move: depends on the challenge type. Start Date: at least 10 days after the challenge is created. Start Time: any. Rating Range: depends on the challenge type. Players Per Club: depends on the challenge type. Concurrent Games per Player: 2. Rated: Yes. Team will be placed on a leaderboard based on the points they score during the game. 6 Scoring points 6.1. Winning a match: 5 points & validate the associated challenge on the team's bingo card.  6.2. Draw: 2 points. 6.3. Successful registration but opponent couldn't start the match; match canceled by opponent: 1 point. 6.4. Clearing a line, a row or a diagonal from the bingo card: 10 points. 6.5. Clearing the full card: 30 points (in addition to the points due for line/column/row completion, therefore a card is worth 150 points in total: 5 rows, 5 columns, 2 diagonal and the full card itself). Note that a validated challenge can't be removed from a card, if a match with the same challenge is lost it will not remove a previously validated square.  7 Awards 7.1. Each team filling a full bingo card will get an award from the Phoenix Chess League. 7.2. Awards will begin being distributed once at least one of the playing team reaches 50 points.. 7.3. Then, three times a year (April 1st, July 1st and October 1st), a quarterly award will be given to the team on top of the leaderboard. 7.4. On January 1st, an award will be given to the top three teams of the leaderboard. 8 Withdrawing 8.1. Teams can withdraw from the competition at any moment. On-going matches will still be accounted for, and open matches that are not yet started can be cancelled by the withdrawing team giving the normal compensation point for opponent. 8.2. Teams that have withdrawn cannot be challenged anymore until they re-enter the competition. 8.3. When withdrawing, a team's admin can specify if they want the withdraw to be temporary. If so, the team's status will be set to "inactive" and other teams won't be allowed to challenge them. 8.4. Team withdrawing temporarly keeps their current bingo card. 9 It's just a game 9.1. Admins representing teams in the game are asked to behave in a responsible way to keep a friendly and fun spirit. Unlike a formal competition, this is a game. 9.2. Please try to restrict the amount of challenges. We don't want to generate challenge spamming. 9.3. If a team already has an open match with another team, or started a match recently, please try to contact that team before sending a new challenge. We don't want this game to turn to a match spamming contest. 9.4. Please report properly open matches and also report finished ones to help with the accounting. 9.5. Results will be updated regularly, but be patient, as this will take a lower priority when compared to other competitions from the league.

Registration is closed for the Phoenix Chess League Fast Vote Chess Season #3. Description: The Phoenix Chess League Fast Vote Chess Season #3 is a 1 day per move Vote Chess tournament. Clubs will play in groups of up to 8, in a round robin format. If 8 clubs or less registered in this event, all clubs will be playing in the same group; if 9 are more clubs registered in this event, they will be divided in 2 or more groups, by their apparent strengths (Group A, Group B etc.). To ensure a correct assessment of challenges creation and matches acceptation in time, challenges and matches must be reported in this topic before the end of the challenging and acceptation periods. As a general rule, common sense and best effort will be used. Registration is closed for the Phoenix Chess League Fire and Ashes Season #1. Description: The Phoenix Chess League Fire and Ashes Season #1 is a daily chess tournament combining classical chess, Fischer-random (chess 960) and thematic openings. Clubs will play in groups of up to 8, in a round robin format. At each round, each club will play one match of classical chess, one match of chess 960 and one match with a book opening with the same opponent. Result for a round is decided as best of 3, or draw, at match level. Rules: The competition will have one single section: open rating, 10+ players. All matches will be played by 'Rounds', with pairings between each club. At each round a different pre-set position extracted from the Opening Book positions will be used for the thematic match. All rounds will start on Tuesdays, from 27th of May 2025 and will continue for up to 9 rounds with four weeks between each (check the program below for each round's starting date). Starting of matches of classical, 960 and thematic are shifted by one week each. The calendar is given as a reference, but teams can agree to start their matches at a different date as long as it's not later than November 30th, 2025. Teams can agree to have matches from other competitions count for PCL Fire and Ashes S1, provided their start date is not prior to the start date of round 1, that at start time they have at least 10 players registered on both side, have open rating and open number of players, and that they are played no slower than 3 days per move. For the thematic matches, a different opening can be used with agreement of both teams as long as it's one of chess.com's opening book. For instance, matches of TMCL (open), 1WL Swiss4All, 1WL Grand Prix, WL, EL, TCMAC Phoenix, TCMAC Battle of Legions, TCMAC Master 960, PCL Thematic Openings, PCL Super Bingo A2, B2, C2, D2, E2 & F2, LLCM, etc., are eligible. All rounds will start on Tuesdays for unrated and Saturdays for rated, from respectively 4th and 8th of November for Open and two weeks later for U1400, and will continue with 4 weeks between each (check the calendar below for each round's starting date). Either club in an match can send the challenge, latest 12 days before the starting date. Matches need to be accepted latest 9 days before the starting date. If none of both clubs sent the challenge in time, match will be counted as lost to both clubs; if a club did not accept the challenge 3 days after its opponent had send the challenge, match will be counted as lost by the club who did not accept the challenge. To ensure a correct assessment of challenges creation and matches acceptation in time, challenges and matches must be reported in this topic before the end of the challenging and acceptation periods. As a general rule, common sense and best effort will be used. The content will be, when possible, chosen over the form and the effort will be going towards starting as many matches as possible rather than having forfeits for purely technical reasons. Requirements of joining:  For teams that didn't participate yet in a daily competition of the Phoenix Chess League, please provide a reference match, that has at least 3 (for U1400) or 5 (open) players. Registration is closed for the Phoenix Chess League Fast Vote Chess Season #2. Description: The Phoenix Chess League Fast Vote Chess Season #2 is a 1 day per move Vote Chess tournament. For more detailed information, check Match Parameters below. Rules: All matches will be played by 'Rounds', with pairings between each club. Matches will use a time control of 24h per move and classical chess as rules. All rounds will start on Wednesdays, starting on the 5th of February 2025. Subsequent rounds will be announced every week (check the calendar below for each round's starting date). Either club in an match can send the challenge immediately after the pairings are issued. All matches must be created before the next pairing is issued, or within a week for the last round. If none of both clubs sent the challenge in time, match will be counted as lost for both clubs; if a match for which the challenge has been reported in time has not been accepted within the valid time period, the match will be counted as lost for the club who did not accept the challenge. Registration is closed for the Phoenix Chess League Slow Chess 960 Season #1. Description: The Phoenix Chess League Slow Chess 960 Season #1 is a 7 day per move Fischer-Random (Chess 960) tournament. Clubs will play in groups of up to 8, in a round robin format. If 8 clubs or less registered in this event, all clubs will be playing in the same group; if 9 are more clubs had registered in this event, we will divide all clubs in 2 or more groups, attempting to sort them by their strengths (Group A, Group B etc.). For more detailed information, check Match Parameters below. Rules: For the first season, matches will be played with open rating and 5+ players per team. All matches will be played by 'Rounds', with pairings between each club. At each round a different pre-set position will be used. All rounds will start on Saturdays, from 28th of December, and will continue for up to 9 more weeks each (three weeks between each round, check the calendar below for each round's starting date). Either club in an match can send the challenge, latest 12 days before the starting date. Matches need to be accepted latest 9 days before the starting date. If none of both clubs sent the challenge in time, match will be counted as lost to both clubs; if a club did not accept the challenge 3 days after its opponent had send the challenge, match will be counted as lost to the club, who did not accept the challenge. Requirements of joining:  Registering teams are asked to provide a link to a sample 5+ players Chess 960 match. Calendar: (DD/MM) Round # Challenging period start date Matches start date Round 1 13/12/2024 28/12/2024 Round 2 03/01/2025 18/01/2025 Round 3 24/01/2025 08/02/2025 Round 4 14/02/2025 01/03/2025 Round 5 07/03/2025 22/03/2025 Round 6 28/03/2025 12/04/2025 Round 7 18/04/2025 03/05/2025 Registrations will close on 30th of November, groups will be announced on the 1st of December and will be open for discussion until the 12th of December. We will update results frequently, and once all matches are adjudicated, we will announce the results and the winners. The results of Phoenix Chess League Slow Chess 960 Season #1 will determine the placements for Phoenix Chess League Slow Chess 960 Season #2. Good luck to all teams! This topic aims to prepare the future next season of the Thematic Endgames (even if it won't start before some months). For context, season 1 was "rated", some admins expressed concerns after the parameters were announced, but we couldn't reach a consensus before the season started. Ideas was to have Open and U1400 rated and an additional U1600 unrated, another option would be to have all unrated, to which some admins expressed their preference for all rated. Extract from today's notes (triggering the discussion): McSlash1 8 min ago  0  I fully agree with my teammate and friend @Kookaburrra Padaq 8 min ago  0  I can give my opinion? mlongpre2 40 min ago  0  I would prefer unrated games, but I like too much practice the endgame not to join. Kookaburrra 47 min ago  0  I always said it should be unrated and my clubs never entered because of it. It’s just a part of a game and to lose or gain the same rating for that just part of a game doesn’t seem great to me and hard to justify to club members. Ximoon 2 hrs ago  0  Thanks for the feedback. We'll definitely have some debate with other admins before next season. For the current one there was some admins expressing this concern but we couldn't converge in time. Chris_E_S3 2 hrs ago  0  I shouldn't say "my club". I mean from the same club as me, namely - King of the Hill Team - Chris_E_S3  0  Christophe, Three people from my club think that the thematic endgames should be unrated. I thought I would give you this feedback for next season (?). The reason is that some of them are easy to draw and some of them have a good chance of a 1-1 split (one win each) even if there is a rating difference of over 100. In short, higher rated people are losing rating. A couple of people told me they really enjoy them. One person told me he doesn't want to play standard chess, only these endgames.
The purpose of this topic is to answer questions the league members might have, and to list possible suggestions and ideas that might pop up.
