I've always considered the whole "tri-county" area (Dade, Broward, and Palm Beach) to be "South Florida". I grew up in Broward, but live up in Palm Beach County now. But it seems like everyone in this group is talking about Miami only. Anyone a little further north? Also, what's with the ugly orange and green color scheme? Are you Hurricanes fans or something? *puke* Go Seminoles!!! --Fromper

So in my previous post - I have been away from playing Chess. Here is my return game, after not playing for a few years. so many errors, smh.
so lately I've been thinking about the lack of chess tournaments and otb play in miami. i look at orlando for example and they have a pretty consistent schedule with the central florida chess club. my question is, how could we in miami have more opportunities to play? could we set up weekly tournaments? i'm looking for ideas to see what we can do. the only place right now that gets close is the chess academy on 8th st, but even then, it's closed often and the only tourneys are sunday and they don't always take place. i would appreciate everyone's input.

Hey everyone, Me and a couple friends get together at a McDonalds in Hialeah/Miami Lakes every Wednesday. Location: 5851 Northwest 177th Street, Hialeah, FL, 33015. Time: 8pm (roughly) to 1am (when McDonald's closes) We are there every Wednesday without fault, and would love some fellow chess afficionados to stop by and have fun. Message me if you have any questions. Best, Luis G.

Your Organizer, Michael Hutsko, sent the following message to some members of South Florida Chess: Announcing a new Meetup for South Florida Chess! What: Thursday Recreational Chess @ Panera When: Thursday, December 2, 2010 5:30 PM Where: Panera Bread 12205 Biscayne Blvd North Miami, FL (305) 891-5021 Panera Meetup #4! Let's hang out this Thursday evening for some casual, no stress chess at Panera Bread at the southeast corner of NE 123rd St. & Biscayne Blvd. in North Miami. 5:30pm-8pm (or longer if you feel like sticking around). All abilities are strongly encouraged to come! Bring a board & a clock if you have one. Please let me know if I should bring one for you. Got an opening you'd like to study? I will have books with me that you can read over while you're not playing...or find someone else who is willing to play through lines with you. Fritz 12 will also be available for game analysis. It will also be REALLY NICE if we can patronize their establishment since we are using their space. Please RSVP! RSVP to this Meetup:

Hi everyone.....i am a musician from ft. lauderdale. To be honest ...i am not that good at chess.. but i like to play and would love to improve my game.
Hi, SFChessers. Just wanted to introduce myself. Technically I live in Fort Myers, but in reality I'm just a couple of miles from Sanibel, so identify much more with Sanibel & Captiva. I relocated here from the Dallas area 2 years ago and am so happy I made the decision! I belong to two chess clubs and am, so far, the only female player in both clubs. At first I felt intimidated, but all the guys have made me feel welcome and have provided excellent and patient coaching, as well as playing uncoached games with me. I consider every game a practice game at my level, but a few weeks ago I checkmated the 2nd best player in one of the clubs. The guys all stood up and applauded me, which really boosted my confidence. However, I don't expect to recapture that moment for some time and enjoy every game, win, lose, or draw. Nancy

Hi everyone! I played in a OTB tournament last week at UM that was run by a expert level player Matan Prilleltensky and a couple of Master level players joined. I am not aware of the tournament activity everyone has but i was curious to know if we would like to participate in OTB tournaments. Players and ratings: FM Charles Galofre, NM Eric Rodriguez, NM Ernesto Alvarez, FM Fabio La Rota. if you would like to be a part of a OTB chess community, let me know and I will put time to create these for us :) Thanks! charles galofre skype: charles.galofre
este problema es tomado de un juego real de blitz el cual no termino de esta manera, pero luego de analizarlo llegue a la conclusion que pudo haberse acabado mucho mas elegante, espero lo disfruten

Anyone training for the Miami Chess Open?
I've attached a copy of an Abbott Chess Problem (no 7) that I have issue with and thought I would see what others think about this. This is a two move puzzle. I think the puzzle can be solved with a Bc3 for mate, one move. The solution in the book is Qh6 - Bc3. Is this an unnecessary step just to make two moves or am I missing something? Thanks, David

I'm throwing out this proposal to see if there is any interest. I participate in a prison ministry here in South Florida, and I have come to know many men who play chess and do it well. I've brought softball teams inside and had a great time, and now I'd like to bring in a few men to play chess against them. I've beaten them in softball and now I'm talking smack about chess, too. I can guarantee a safe environment and a great time. I also promise a rewarding experience for you. This would probably occur some time in late June or July. If anyone is interested, just let me know. Email me or respond here. God bless, canwil
