EL 2025: Please Register Now If You Want Your Team To Take Part In The New Season

Please read carefully!

With next season's EL 2025 tournament due to begin in less than two months, it's time to invite interested teams to sign up.

In order to avoid the problem of outstanding, unopened matches at the close of the season, as we had in 2024, we're planning to make the 2025 tournament a lot more structured, draws being posted on scheduled dates with a complete set of match parameters, including fixed match starts. This makes supervising the running of a tournament much simpler and enables the prompt detection of errors in challenges, so that we can alert the team concerned and get it corrected before it becomes a problem.

We're still discussing the fine detail of this but we plan to post the round 1 draw early in the new year.

* EL (European League) tournaments are 'Daily' (i.e. one day or more time control) team-match competitions between clubs that are registered with us as European teams.

Some match settings such as the minimum team size (/'players per team') depend on the division a team is placed in as follows:-

  • Division 1: Minimum players 75
  • Division 2: Minimum players 50
  • Division 3: Minimum players 25
  • Division 4: Minimum players 15
  • Division 5: Minimum players 3

..Clubs must be registered by a current admin who will become our first point of contact for their team but a minimum of two admins is required! Additional admins may be nominated but please make sure they consent to represent their teams in the tournament.

We ask all team admins to show commitment to the 2025 tournament in which their teams are involved and this means making every effort in each round to open a (correctly configured) match and filling match teams to their minimum sizes (as given above). If your team took part in the 2024 season, you can find the division it played in here:

EL2024: List of Teams

.

It goes without saying that any admin needs to be able to create challenges according to the settings we use, which include a start date and time, players per team and minimum games. A complete set of challenge settings will be posted in the draw for each round.

The league admin team will of course help team admins in setting up their challenges but we can only do so much and some experience is essential!
.

Registering your club:

By registering below you will automatically become the first ('lead') admin for your club, so there's no need to nominate yourself as an admin but please register only one team in each post! Most importantly, post the URL (the web address) of your club, for example...

https://www.chess.com/club/world-league-headquarters

Please don't use an embedded link (if using MS Edge try using Ctrl+Shift+v to paste your URL)

If you choose to nominate additional admins just give their names, for example: stephen_33, @stephen_33, or https://www.chess.com/member/stephen_33 are all fine.

That's the only information we need at this point but add any other details or text you wish.

I'll post the list of registered teams in post #2 as we go along but there may be some delay between registering and seeing your team appear in the list.

.Let's make it a successful tournament in 2025!

The EL admin team.

I've been asked about the arrangement for 'doubling up' matches with the World League (WL).

This is where teams playing in EL are able to use matches in the WL tournament schedule (involving the same pair of teams of course) in place of their EL match, so they have to play only the one match. Teams that prefer to play both matches are entitled to do that.

Although we're discussing this at the moment, I believe we'll allow this still for all scheduled EL matches that are duplicated in the WL divisions that run on the round-robin pairing system. The difficulty that arises is with team-pairs in those WL divisions that are run on the Swiss system because it isn't possible to post a schedule of all matches in advance, unlike in EL.

The consequence of that can be that teams may defer setting up their matches until very late and then tournament organisers are in the position of having to push teams to get several matches open at the same time. This is the situation we found ourselves in a couple of months ago and is far from ideal, either for teams or us.

At the moment it's not clear how this might be resolved other than to withdraw the right to double-up matches in WL divisions that use the Swiss format.

* I was asked to clarify this: "Teams that prefer to play both matches are entitled to do that"

The question of one team objecting to using the 'duplicate' WL match was raised and I think the preferred default would always be to play the EL match. Only if both teams in a match wish to use the duplicate WL match will we count it in EL as well.

From post #1:-

Clubs must be registered by a current admin who will become our first point of contact for their team but a minimum of two admins is required!

.
But you're a coordinator, not an admin, so please ask @Zindal to register the team and make you the second representative for Team Germany.

There's a good reason for doing it this way because we need at least one person in charge of the team who can remove players from their match-teams (in the case of 'multiplayers') and who is able to view the club's Audit Log. Coordinators aren't able to do either of those.

I'd really appreciate that club URL, not an embedded one!
