Possible to buy half set? (HoS Empire)

Sort:

All,

I recently acquired a House of Staunton ‘Prestige’ Empire set, ebony and blood rosewood.  I’d like to have a lighter ½ set to pair with either of the two ‘Prestige’ sides, but without having to purchase an expensive second set.

Mandeep at Staunton Castle did agree to this sort of deal once for a Hallett set (boxwood & ebony, then added padauk later), but he was the producer…. I have no idea who the producer is of this set for HoS (I doubt HoS can help even if they were interested).  Any ideas?

Hi  baudouin27 I think you find it was TCE who made them for HOS or at least did in the past ?

TCE are open to custom work, had made me some knights in padauk + Boxwood , some years back ! Not cheap but saved me having to buy the same set over again ! See set 1 for custom knights wink

Lighthouse, I love the Sinquefield knights!

No harm in asking them, I suppose (some Amritsar company is making those sets - maybe it’s them!).

One problem solved - and another created (an old story!). After purchasing an older HoS Prestige Empire set, two ‘issues’ emerged:

1) Everything about the Empire set, once in hand, charmed me: the design, the fineness of detail and finish, the weight.

2) The HoS ‘Prestige’ sets can be challenging colorwise - the dark pieces and the light are very close (and likely to get closer with age).

So enamoured by the set, I decided it would be terrific to add boxwood pieces, so options to play ebony-blood rosewood, ebony-boxwood, boxwood-blood rosewood.

I wasn’t able to purchase a half-set, but found a second-hand set from Frank Camaratta (always a pleasure to purchase from and something is always learned).

The old ‘Prestige’ set I purchased was ebony-blood rosewood. The set Frank sold me was padauk-boxwood. Frank explained that ‘Blood Rosewood is Red Sandalwood, not Padauk’ - I had always assumed they were different names for the same wood.

Both sets now happily in hand, I have noticed that they are not identical. The pieces in the Prestige set are slightly heavier. The bases have an ever so slight difference in dimension and profile (but consistent within each set). And the knights are very similar, but not the same: the Prestige knights have a finer aquiline head, while the boxwood-padauk set have a slightly chunkier design.

None of this affects the ability to mix the sets to play different color schemes, but still an unexpected issue. I suppose this happens as sets are produced over a long period of time and production shifts from one producer to another in Amritsar or carvers change:

Here are some photos - the *green* leather bottom is the Prestige set; the red leather bottom is Frank’s set:
