Despite all of the openings listed, I didn't vote because I don't mind facing any of them! Perhaps that is why I play 1. d4

I hate to face the Benko, but what I do is this:

That may be silly, but it would bamboozle him. now, while he got pawns to take, I'll safely 0-0 lol

In the Benko, I play the fully Accepted old Mainline and make Black prove their pawn grin.png

The Grunfeld I don't mind facing either, but admittingly there is a lot of sharp theory. I don't mind that sort of stuff, but I understand it isn't for everyone. Here is something you may look into for the Benko and the Grunfeld:

Forum thread I created on the Benko: https://www.chess.com/forum/view/chess-openings/what-is-blacks-compensation-here-furthermore-how-sound-is-the-benko-gambit-in-general

Forum thread I created on the Grunfeld: https://www.chess.com/forum/view/chess-openings/how-to-handle-this-grunfeld-line

Obviously, both threads only cover a few lines and not entire opening ideas (which could take entire books as some have written), but this is likely more than enough to get an idea or two happy.png

Yes, I know Black can take the rook, I'm no inferior moron, but I wanted to show my idea for White.
Besides, temporarily, White's light bishop is stuck. And not so temporarily, your dark bishop is very annoying for him [don't hurry to switch him].

Of horse, you need to know to answer the Cambridge Springs, or else

ThrillerFan’s assessment is not wrong though

I dont every play d4 so....

Probably the Budapest for me. I have a line prepared, and maybe I’m just playing it wrong, but it just leads to positions that I’m not usually trying to play when I play 1. d4. Apparently, c5 and f4 are supposed to be good moves for white to look for, but I’m not usually looking to play those kinds of moves…

I always assumed that d4 players prefer sleepy, positional games. Personally, I hate closed games so started playing the Grunfeld. I’m guessing that most d4 players dislike it because if they liked open games, they’d play e4, but I’m not a d4 player so I wouldn’t really know.

as someone who just got back from td'ing a scholastic tournament i can confirm over 50% of the positions i see are just like that

If you refine your opening repertoire properly, you'll know how to handle ANY black reply to d4.

I play the Jobava London (and the normal London on occasion) so I guess I hate the e6 c5 lines the most.

Well I guess I won’t be playing in any scholastic tournaments anytime soon

I can help you out. This is part of my study on the D4 Indian Defenses based off the book from Lars Schandorff where he goes into the Budapest Defense and even the Fajarowicz Variation

You can copy the study if you want to add your own things or experiences for you to study.

For D4 what is the best move to play against?

busterlark
EKAFC - interesting stuff. I usually play that exact line until 8. Nxe5… I usually don’t have anything prepared by move 8. I’ll have to look into it some time when I’m more interested, but why would that be a good move for white? I would have assumed that white would prefer the immediate 8. Be2 to prepare castling, and if 8… Nxf3+ 9. Bxf3, the position seems perfectly fine for white, while 8. Nxe5 Nxe5 9. Be2 just allowed black to exchange one of the (potentially redundant) knights without any big benefits that I can see.
busterlark
Never mind — I guess the point is 8. Be2 Nxf3+ 9. Bxf3 Ne5, and black is looking at both the bishop and at c4. Interesting, that’s something I hadn’t thought of before. Thank you for this

The Benoni. No matter how many moves deep I can cling onto white's advantage, I always seem to mess something up in the center and then start playing super aggressively to compensate. And then lose

DasBurner

Old Benoni, Modern Benoni, Czech Benoni, Snake Benoni, they're all hell for me
