Courtesy Abort function

I think it would be nice to add a possibility of aborting any game in progress (not just on first move), if your opponent agrees. I think it is not that uncommon in chess and it is called a courtesy abort.

This means if you press ABORT button during the game, your opponent would see a message like this: "Your opponent would like to abort the game, do you agree?", and if they agree, game would be aborted with no ratings change.

I like this function on FICS, so why not have it on this great site...

maybe a new game type of teaching in addition to rated and unrated

I think this function should be available in all types of games and in live chess too. It's just sort of upgrade to current Abort function.

In a blitz game (or 'live' chess in general) I would agree that a courtesy abort would be good, for the reason that you may have an emergency (sick child, unexpected visitors, etc). I feel if you are playing a match for training purposes though it should be unrated and a training mode would be preferable, so you could do things like 'allow takebacks', 'turn off the timer', or even be able to take over both sides as the 'trainer'.

What Erik wrote about (the proposed) UNDO:

we are going to create a TRAINING mode for people who want to be able to have UNDOs. but we've talked over this many times: offering UNDOs is basically giving a tool for people to be annoying and rude. it also then makes the person who refuses the UNDO feel like the jerk. we give you a double-confirmation move system. if you blunder after that, then next time maybe you'll take your time? :D  http://www.chess.com/forum/view/community/turn-based-chess-undos

applies to ABORTs as well.

I agree completely about UNDO option, I think it should exist only in teching mode games.

But I wouldn't put UNDO and ABORT in the same basket - UNDO does not exist in OTB chess, while courtesy ABORT does, and for a good reason I think.

Anyway, we could have an option in settings (or a check box next to the board) for automatically declining such ABORT offers, so when you check it before or during the game you would not see any annoying offers. That would put an end to any possible abuse of these options.
