Only possible in Xiangji which is Chinese chess; it would be cool if they had Xiangji on chess.com too, the game has much value even tho it is very different form western chess.

Speaking of double checks, here’s a little something that I made awhile ago: http://www.matplus.net/start.php?px=1569336541&app=forum&act=posts&fid=gen&tid=2301

How many ways are there for Black to enforce a selfmate?

Interesting position! Selfmate in 1 or in any amount of moves?

RewanDemontay

@Arisktotle Ahaha, yes. I forgot to say. It’s a one move selfmate.

Thanks! I see the solutions but that will be no surprise. It's all about getting maximum double checks.

Suppose I try to improve on 28 double checkmates, is it allowed to have single checkmate variations besides the double checkmates? Like 40 double checkmates + 3 single checkmates?

One simple improvement would be to add a black knight on g6. That gives the extra ...Ne5+ selfmate solution. Well, that is if the position is still legal. I haven't checked that yet!

@Arisktotle The task is about maximum selfmates by double checks ONLY.

And thanks  for the nice knight idea! In, you can legally add in BOTH black knights for a new record of 30!

Here’s a small PG of how to get the needed passed pawns and pawn structure: 1. h4 g5 2. g4 f5 3. f4 e5 4. b4 exf4 5. c4 fxg4 6. d4 gxh4 7. e4 h5 8. a4 b5 9. axb5 c5 10. bxc5 d5 11. exd5 a6

Arisktotle

Ah, you have become very efficient in making retro pawn analysis! However, your 30 mates don't work because the king can escape to d5 after a knight check!

I'll take a look at improving the maximum but that's not easy when I can't permit a few single checkmates on the side.

Yeah I saw that like right after I posted. The record atm is then 29. I suppose we could call a joint-compostion between us? There has got to be someplace to put the second knight.

Arisktotle

Unless I can make a really significant improvement, let's leave it in your name. I am pretty good at perfecting compositions, but I think the originator deserves a lot more credit.

Arisktotle

Here is one with a few extra variations. Just legal, I believe.

INCORRECT; see #45 instead

I'm just not seeing the legality.. All those promoted pieces with just four missing piece? Just take out a couple Black knights-you still have a new record of 30. It's amazing what can be found in matrix. But you could have this 32 be a record for an illegal position.
