LOTR chess set?

If you could design a set of chessmen themed after the Lord of the Rings trilogy, what would it be like? This thread was inspired by the one on Star Wars.

I actually own that board... though it was for a much more reasonable price. It is a very nice board, as I'm a big fan of both chess and LOTR.

Funny how people react when I tell them I've never played a game on it. Then I pull out my little $8 magnetic board and I tell them I've easily played over 100 games on this one.

Maybe someday I'll have my little magnetic chessboard sitting on an expensive display, and I'll tell people how I've retired that board.

I, too, have never played a game on my LOTR set.  I can't stand playing a game unless both players are comfortably clear on what each piece represents.  Non-traditional sets are purely decorational.

True enough. I had a girlfriend once who went to brazil to see her family... I gave her some money and asked for a ronaldinho jersey, she brought me back a chess set carved from stone. It was nice but the bishops looked like big pawns and the queen looked like the king, just half a head shorter.

She was distraught that it wasn't my everyday chess set.

I don't let my wife buy me chess sets, I find I can only really play with very classical looking pieces.

Having said that, I do love my LOTR chess set. It's very showy.

Yep me too.  I paid about 600 quid for one.  LOTR is one of the reasons I started playing Chess, there are several references to the game in the book which I read 16 times.

I also don't play Chess on it.  It's a good ornament but after a time I realised this involved too much dusting down of the board.  So all the pieces now sit inside.  Patiently waiting on my death, after which some relative will wind up punting it on e-bay.

Not sure if anyone is interested, but I thought such a forum could be appropriate to advertise the blog I have just published. Hope you enjoy tongue.png
