Grandmaster misses mate in 2!!

Jengaias: So he was able to memorize 20 moves without writing them down while in time pressure? Seems unlikely. I honestly think that Benjamin had sufficient time and overevaluated the position, and failed to calculate the obvious.

I doubt that, even. There's no way GM Stripunsky would allow a mate in 2 unless he too was in time trouble. Again, I think Benjamin completely overlooked the mate.

Lasker1900: Very rarely do players of such caliber miss something so obvious. I showed this position to a 1200 player and he found it right away.

It is very possible both players were in severe time-trouble. The notation could have been generated in real time by a digital electronic board, or after the game from a video of the game, from a spectator/assistant's notes, or yes, even from the GM's memory (many GMs can easily recall theirs' and others' complete games without looking at notes).
Why not just research accounts of this game instead of assuming that the GMs were not in time-trouble just because there is a record of the game?

Masters, Fide Masters, International Masters, Grand Masters believe it or not are humans. Many are very strong - they can see many moves ahead or have superb memory or amazing positional skills...etc But that does not mean they can't make mistake or can't miss something. It will happen, if not in single game then next game or next game. I stopped fearing that much (but still many respect to them, but not all of them) and even more when you draw or win your first game vs GM. Their Title is for Life - But their chess form is NOT. Not saying they drop their skills (but that is possible with age or inactivity for instance) but eventually they will make bad game/s. It might be due something that happened to them in previous day or their health is bad, or they just have bad day or are tired etc. They r not machines/computers..

@Lasker1900. Absolutely right. Nobody is perfect in this world. (unfortunaly!). GM's are human GM...not engines. That's what makes chess so fun!

I actually have met Joel Benjamin. Next time I see him at the Dr Ostfeld Memorial ICA Open I will ask him about this mate.

I've seen a video clip on youtube, where GM Ivanchuk missed a mate in one against Victor Korchnoi in the 90's
