I don't think anyone really knows, but I read on someone's profile once (Can't remember who) but there is more checkmates than every granule of sand on every beach in the world.

Did you know: there is a greater number of pizza toppings than there are positions on a chessboard?
Does anybody know the number of possible positions in chess?? Ive heard many diffrent numbers, but most of them dont include the possiblilty of getting pawns across to achieve like 3 knights and 8 queens, or 5 rooks and 4 queens + 3 knights If you find out plz let em know :D
