did they switch ten minute to rapid?

It lists ten minute as rapid now. Was this an abrupt change or did they announce it. Anyhow, this was a good change for me, because it got my garbage rapid rating up to 1500 like my blitz without me having to put the work in by grinding the rating system.

You don't have to worry on the rating part. The way Glicko works, you will gain/lose a lot of rating after each game so if you are overrated at the current one, you'll quickly settle into where you should be.

yes

I've only just discovered it myself.

That will be the last time i play a 10 minute rated game; 10 minutes always feels like blitz to me not rapid. I don't want to play a rapid game with a blitz mindset.

Not a very logical change by chess.com; as the comments here show people who prefer blitz can now just get their rapid rating up by playing blitz games.

I see a huge influx of 2100+ people playing 10 mins. For me, lack of people playing 10mins has always been a problem... Now it won't.

I think 10mins is more like rapid... especially online, when you don't have to physically reach out to move your pieces and stuff. 3min online is like 5min OTB.

there are still other people who think that 10 min is more rapid-like than blitz-like

if chess.com tries to please everyone, they will please none

10 minutes games are officially blitz according to the official chess rules. Anything longer moves into the rapid zone, but 10 is blitz.

But i always play better the longer the time control is so i am indeed biased. Hey ho happy.png I will stick to 5+5 for blitz and 15 + mins for rapid in future.

ya, and some people don't agree with fide so who knows

they've changed it to rapid, then blitz, then rapid before and etc so we don't really know if their judgement is right lol

It depends on an individuals style. For me 10 minutes feels very fast and i make many blunders cos i feel rushed. I cannot play a 5 or a 3 minute game properly; it's too fast for me.

Obviously some people feel differently so you end up with different opinions on what should be blitz, rapid etc. SO no one is right really happy.png

Making 10 minute games as rapid is the worst thing you have ever done.  It combines blitz and rapid and makes it impossible to watch regular rapid games because it runs out of space when scrolling looking for rapid games.  It has ruined the whole rating system.  This change is almost as bad as adding increments to the time of a chess games.  Both have ruined an otherwise wonderful game.

What runs out of space when scrolling for rapid games?

The beauty of chess is to study the variations of a position, not to slam down a move in seconds, hoping for a good result.  Magnus and Fischer were world champions because of their photographic memories, not because  of their blitz play  .  Fischer could remember every game he ever played.

Nobody is forcing you to play faster time controls? If you like to take your time and feel like chess.com doesn't offer that chance (it really doesn't), you can go to another chess website like L-chess

STarrasch

Thanks for telling me to go to another chess website,  but i think I will ignore your offer.  I think chess.com made a big mistake and I will continue to try and get them to change it back to real chess.

sndeww

@STarrasch I do not understand your complaint. What do you mean, real chess? If you mean games where players are able to have enough time to make the best moves possible, I don't believe it is realistic that there are many who have enough time to play 30min games or longer on the internet. I think your complaint was something about watching rapid games, but I didn't really get that.

STarrasch

i do not care if you get it or not,  I am trying to get chess.com to realize that I can no longer watch all the regular games.  because there are too many 10 minute games clogging the rapid game category.  Most all are 10 min. games.

The beauty of chess used to be the fact that it could be played with solely mental power and that opening theory was unknown to most average players. Now, among high rated players,  it has been a competition to see who can memorize the most opening moves.

STarrasch

You dont have to memorize openings to enjoy chess.  Blitz chess will ruin your standard game, as has been attested to by many great players.  I have forgotten  most openings I learned when I first played at the age of 10 and those I learned over many years.  I am older than dirt, but I still love to play. I prefer slower games, My ability to play fast games has been greatly decreased.  I enjoy watching games, which is the whole point of my previous statements.

STarrasch

Most internet chess players dont bother to learn openings and wonder why their rating is so low.  I remember i played a game in an over the board tourney in Texas against a very strong player,  But I was able to play the book lines for about 10 or 12 moves., because the time limit was 40/2.  2 hours , no increment, even though I was not familiar with the opening lines.
