Quite awful and a bit embarrassing as well
How bad is a 640 rating

Everyone starts as a beginner. Most remain so after years of play. Developing skill is hard work for most people.
Below 1200 is a beginner, unless you are from a country that values chess, such as Ukraine. Then, below 1500 is a beginner.

The OP wrote this two years ago. He is higher rated now at 1441 daily.
The OP is 715 rapid. They’ve played four correspondence games—all wins, and all in 2021—to get that 1441 rating. That’s obviously not the rating in question. Only the rapid rating is based on more games than a butcher has fingers.
My advice to anyone on ratings and I speak from experience been playing since I was 17 for club and local county- weekend Chess Congress,'s DO NOT PUT TOO MUCH IMPORTANCE ON A RATING, HOW YOUR RATING IS UP OR DOWN?!! when your starting off its not the bees knees of your chess progress whether it's high or on the decline to play this game and play to a creasonable level takes time remember the most famous quotation in chess from the great Emanuelle Lasker who said: CHESS IS AS LIFE, YOU WILL HAVE GOOD DAYS & ALSO BAD DAYS ON THE ROAD TO CHESS ENLIGHTENMENT!!

Do you enjoy playing?
If the answer is yes then does rating really matter? Its just how the site matches you against someone at a similar level. If you see it as a measure of your ability thats a recipe for discontent.

I don't really care for attempting to increase my rating, I only care about beating the people I am normally matched up against. If the engine thinks I should play someone 1000 elo above me, I'll still do it. I just want to play chess.

Frankly put, this is the sort of rating you’d expect a very young child with no knowledge of the game to have. I’d encourage you to look at any of your games you thought was played well, and turn on the chess analysis engine. At the 700 level, It’ll show you a whole myriad of blunders and mistakes on both sides. (I also use it as a tool for reviewing my own games)
Ouch, look at those downvotes.
