Is chess embarrassing?

The only manner in which I consider chess could be embarrassing to me is that I do not play better already ;)

As for relations/hips, anyone with a brain knows that the brain is the largest sexual organ anyway :p

I'm not particularly nerdy, though I can draw on "nerd chic" if seems appropriate.

Hey, chess didn't even make it into Weird Al's "White and Nerdy" song Undecided

Not only did chess make it into Weird Al's "White and Nerdy", but it's mention was even preceded by "even".

What takes more talent to compete in ? Dart"s / Euchre / bingo / or Chess ?

the question is how did phil taylor become so strong a dart player? did he in his entire youth do nothing else than throwing darts for hours a day?? i mean that must be incredibly boring

Chess has been popular with the people Ive been around all throughout my life. There was just this one kid in 6th-8th grade who made a specific point to try to pick on me for it. It was funny he was calling me a nerd in a really condescending way and I was better than him at every sport he played :).

People who "look down" on chess probably suck ass, so why would you worry about what they think? I frequently play at local coffeshops and bars, and I've yet to notice any disapproving or snotty looks from anyone who watched me playing. But then again, maybe I'm just looking at the world through rose-colored glasses...

Back in the day.......  I would go into a 24hr burger joint with a buddy of mine and we would play non stop blitz from about 6 pm until 6 or 7 am !  We got some strange looks but I dont think it was for playing chess as much as it was for staying so long....... Wink

Interesting observation: iPads eat quote code here.

I think playing chess in public is far more respectible than someone playing Yahtzee.  In fact, it seems like in popular culture, Yahtzee picked up kind of a nerd/geek status, as in someone yelling "Yahtzee!!!" is totally uncool.

well of course it is, and im glad it is. Yahtzee is probably one of the, if not the most pointless game i ever encountered in my life. Its so damn boring... i can´t believe anyone, without a gun to his head likes to play that game

When I was in high school, I tried to keep the fact that I played competitive chess away from everyone. I wasn't really a popular guy, but wasn't considered one of the "nerds" either. Eventually the word got out and I thought my reputation would be ruined, but to my surprise everyone seemed to think it was cool. Suddenly I had something else to talk about and became slightly more popular. Maybe my HS was weird, but since then I've never been embarrassed about playing chess.

Awww that was teenage gitters :(

Embarrassing? Why would it be? If you enjoy iwhatever you do and it harms no one else, who gives a toss what others think!

Scottrf

Embarrassing is trying to appear a certain way to impress others.

True. Besides, I don't think others think all this bad stuff about chess near as much as chess players seem to think they do, anyway.

Crazychessplaya

Some of my best friends are chess players.
