Is there a maximum simultaneous number of on-line games?

Hi,

I am getting back in to chess having played as a kid. This website has really helped.

I just wondered if there is a maximum number of games that can be played simulaneously? I ask as an individual in a tournament I am playing in is playing 86 currently! As a result he takes a full 5 days per move, which though within the rules is really slowing the tournament down.

For example, I played my last move in the first round around 8 weeks ago and am waiting for the second round to start. I can't really complain, as I signed up for the max 5 days tournament, but it is frustrating to have to wait so long and I can't quite understand how you can properly play 86 games at once. How is it possible to remember all your strategies?

So, is there a limit? If not, should there be a limit?

Thanks.

86 games? That's nothing. Nothing I say!

A guy named Ramon Palatan had 4919 games ongoing concurrently earlier this year.

At one point, he broke down and lost 958 games on time and his rating fell by 1000 points. However,  his rating has recovered and he is managing his current games pretty well. His overall record in Online Chess is now:

Online Chess

1616

I am happy to see that he has returned to his senses and has only 1640 games going on now.

You will feel fortunate to learn that his current timeout percentage of 17% in the last 90 days keeps him out of tournaments.

That is astonishing! Thanks for the reply and link. It must me like spinning plates! (one for the kids there...)

How long does it take Ramon each day to get through his chess moves? 1640 games at 1.25 days per move. 1312 moves per day? Allowing a generous 15 seconds thinking time means 328 minutes a day?

I think Ramon needs help.

Most of the angles are covered in the thread, but a time out rate of 17% (although remarkable given the number of games be played concurrently) means that a lot of people are winning by default. For me, this is the least satisfying way of winning and it's quite disrepectful to the opponent to time out purely (huge assumption by me here) by to failing to manage an excessive number of games.

I shall have to make sure that I do more research when choosing an opponent/tournament.
