From the same guy who once swore to the world he was playing online speed chess with Bobby Fischer, now comes the declaration that "men and women have different brains," therefore women can't be as good as men in chess.

While it's evident that Nigel Short's own brain is in serious need of a scrubbing, the point is that not only is he not a geneticist, a biologist, a psychologist, or even a particularly good chess player anymore - but that just like with his Fischer postings, he's a bit "short" a full deck of cards.

At the very least, you would think that someone who has memorized thousands of chess variations would not assert that 3.5 billion people are irrevocably wired differently than 3.5 billion other people, and that never the twain shall meet. It's an extremely simplistic generalization at best, and run-of-the-mill fascism at worst.

Have we all had enough of Nigel now? He patzered his way into obscurity when Kasparov crushed, and I mean crushed, him in 1993. Now he only makes news when he makes idiotic proclamations. It was one thing to be an ICC dupe, but now a grand old sexist?

It's 2015, and still chess suffers its fools heavily. Bye bye Nigel.

Why does this matter? Regardless whether you disagree or agree with him he ist just one person. Who cares?

He is not just one person.

Nigel Short is a British Grandmaster who competed against Kasparov for the World Chess Title back in 1993.

He is one of the strongest minds in chess in the world, and his experience in chess carries enough weight that his opinion matters to those who wish to share experiences in chess.

I recognize this is dredging up an old thread, but I argued vehemently for people to look at evidence and discard their emotions back in 2015, and I see someone dredged it up in 2017 to make more emotional commentary. I just didn't feel comfortable allowing the last word to ignore the significance of the man who said this and the statements he made.

Well, let's not go OVERBOARD. He's a GM.  There are a lot of those out there. Some of them rather dim bulbs.

Hmmm...

I bet this line works wonders with the ladies, pal.

That's how I got four of my wives.

Here's a great piece from Susan Polgar, written this June: “Why is there a need for some all-girls' or womens' chess tournaments?”

Neurosexism: the myth that men and women have different brains (nature.com)
Good ole confirmation bias and a whole heap of folk wiling to defend socially engrained prejudices with poorly designed studies. Empiricism is still a socially modulated phenomenon and the sexism promulgated in this forum is a great example of just one of the roadblocks liniting gender parity in chess.

It's dangerous for chess players to venture into neurology, especially when using their "findings" to support theories about genetic superiority of one group over another.  It's not too far off from measuring skulls to verify worthiness, which is something every fascist county starts doing, sooner or later...

You finally have to ask - what is the motive for it? Why use your name and influence in chess to discourage women from playing chess?  In the end, it doesn't really matter what the "science" is or isn't.  I'm sure there are "reasons" to explain why African-Americans generally make better NBA basketball players than Italian-Americans.  Maybe it's demographics. Maybe it's cultural. Maybe it's biological. Who knows, who cares? But if you browbeat it enough, then young Italians might feel discouraged from taking up the game.

If Nigel Short wants to use his so-called chess fame to send a message, why not look to areas where people need help in our game? I haven't seen Nige doing much on inner-city, lower-income chess lately...if ever.  Is it really so hard to be supportive, instead of dismissive? And think of the tax write-offs, if getting up from the keyboard and mingling with the hoi polloi sounds too painful....

Imagine crying for five years because someone told you that men and women are different.
