His father was a Jew, and bailed out of the marriage when Bobby was an infant.That seems to have left a few psychological scars.
Steve Jobs (another high achiever) had serious issues with his absent biological parents as well.

I would have to agree with this poster.
I always got the feeling that, quite simply, a whole lot of his problems were probably due to his childhood. I am not saying that excuses it, but it is hard to expect a person to behave properly if they were never taught how. Just my two cents and its not worth much seeing as the man is dead and we can't see inside of his head (Although chess-wise THAT would be an interesting thing 
) My point is that ultimately we can't KNOW why he acted the way he did and said some of the offensive stuff that he said.
Can anybody help me out with this one Joe?
