Why did my Rapid Rating Jump when I switched to 10min?

Can anyone help me understand why my rating might have jumped when I switched to 10min? I was playing 15|10 for a while, and I was hovering 1500-1550. I wouldn’t say I was hard stuck, but the games were usually competitive. I switched to 10minute and my rating shot up like 200+ points. My understanding was that 10min had the biggest pool of players, so I assumed it would be MORE competitive there.

Could this be like an elo gap, like while there may be more players in 10min, there are fewer 1500-1700 elo players in 10 min than in 15|10? Any insight into this rating jump would be appreciated.

I mean, not a lot of people play 15/10, and it’s easier than 10 flat. Can’t be sure tho cuz I’m only 200 elo :(

Yeah, it seems anomalous. Appreciate your input

Chesscom doesn't provide much statistics to say what's happening here. Honestly I don't know. But I have 2 possible factors. First is that larger pool doesn't necessarily will mean same or less rating. Elo is relative system, which shows you not your strength, but rather your relative strength compared to other players in this system. If we ad more and more players, distribution will expand in rating range, but the skill of players expect edges doesn't change much. Like you was top n%, it can be that after adding new players you will be around same top n%, but because distribution expanded you will be higher rated, as you better than more people, than before, but possibly not in percenteges. Second is maybe you was better at speed chess than most of your opponents, but in 15+10 it's been compensated for your opponents by time and no zeitnot, and in 10+0 there is more time pressure and speed matters too, and you used your advantage in speed chess. Probably there is more specific factors, maybe I'm completely wrong at something, idk. Specific factors can mess up thing a lot lol, like there is should be higher rapid max ratings than blitz ratings in leaderboards by amount of players, but specifically top edge plays it very little or doesn't play at all for few reasons. Idk

10|0 is much easier, the players are worse here. Idk why.

@Lorudar, I think your analysis in your first point is well considered. I do wish Chesscom would put out more stats on its matchmaking and games in general so we could have a more informed opinion. On your second point, this also occurred to me, but, anecdotally, I don't feel like my games are usually decided by speed in the 10min time control (though some are).
And, @Fet, it is so noticeable. Wish we knew why. Lorudar's point about elo being a comparative measurement that is reflective of your position in your effective pool of players seems logical. Following his logic, perhaps new members default to 10min, and there is some phenomenon by which better members wind up in 15|10 (like members looking to improve more move to 15|10, or people who can and choose to dedicate more time to chess are more able to play longer time controls, etc.).

Bigger player pool as it’s a more common time control. It gets increasingly less dramatic a difference the higher in rating you go, as the player pool naturally converges slightly.
