Thankyou bobes for the 170th puzzle http://www.chess.com/tactics/server?id=132248   . It is however rather easy. I have made it into a puzzle on this occasion but please try to submit puzzles of greater difficulty.

Jpatrick, thankyou for the nice 171st puzzle http://www.chess.com/tactics/server?id=194189

Thankyou myrook, I have explained in a comment under http://www.chess.com/tactics/server?id=474799 why it should remain as a tactics trainer puzzle.

Thankyou Reza_R for an amazing 172nd puzzle http://www.chess.com/tactics/server?id=338903  . It took me a while to understand what was going on. Started one move later to avoid the a8=BorQ ambiguity.

Thankyou Hessmaster for a nice 173rd puzzle http://www.chess.com/tactics/server?id=456345   from page26. I was able to create the puzzle knowing which move it started. My apolgies for forgetting to ask you this.

 Other :

GM AlexanderL thinks http://www.chess.com/tactics/server?id=102951 is great.

92nd puzzle by NyLsel extended to be more similar to the original submission (first move g8=Q or B was ambiguous) http://www.chess.com/tactics/server?id=278281

What about my puzzle?

Martin0

This one is only 2 moves, but I think it is good. I have no engine to check it with though, but if it isn't considered strong enough the white knight can stand on h3 instead of d2. Link to the game (move 27) http://www.chess.com/echess/game?id=56631492

From a game of mine today...I was quite pleased I saw his blunder and was able to capitalize on it.  I don't have an engine to check it out, but I am sure it either wins the queen or is forced mate (which is what happened).

Abhishek2

katonas, is something wrong with my puzzle?

Scottrf

EDIT: Missed the 'your own games' stipulation, but can we add them anyway? From 'Secrets of Pawn endings' if you want to reference, although I changed some of the response moves from their suggested ones. Can you add some pawn endgames? e.g.

Each move is the only line which doesn't either throw away the win or throw away a draw.

Page30 submission that I missed

Thankyou  iixxPROxxii and sorry for missing out your puzzle. I think I scrolled down the page too fast. 174th puzzle http://www.chess.com/tactics/server?id=215533 (knight added to black’s pieces to prevent ambiguity on the second move).

Thankyou chess_persn, for the 175th puzzle http://www.chess.com/tactics/server?id=159916

Thankyou the_knife for the 176th puzzle http://www.chess.com/tactics/server?id=253193 (Gildas game), 177th puzzle http://www.chess.com/tactics/server?id=269675  (NN game)

and 178th puzzle http://www.chess.com/tactics/server?id=64046  which has been extended without ambiguity or alterations. ). All three puzzles started correctly with the computer move, for the last two you receive a prize for producing perfect diagrams whose FEN and movelist could be pasted directly into tactics trainer preventing me from having to create another diagram for tactics trainer.

Lympathy, unfortunately the puzzle is ambiguous. Please see first post for guidance.

Thankyou Metaknight251, for the 179th puzzle http://www.chess.com/tactics/server?id=324487

I felt adding 2…g6 3.Bxg6+ made the puzzle slightly more challenging.

onbliss, unfortunately your first puzzle is ambiguous and only 1 move long, however whilst trying to remove the ambiguity I came across a simple variation puzzle 180th http://www.chess.com/tactics/server?id=142147. Your second submission appears to be ambiguous, and is only 1 move long.

Thankyou bobes, for the 181st puzzle, http://www.chess.com/tactics/server?id=432847

Thankyou snar, for the 182nd puzzle http://www.chess.com/tactics/server?id=203925

Thankyou bobes, for the 183rd puzzle http://www.chess.com/tactics/server?id=392707  (c1 bishop to remove ambiguity on the second move)

Thankyou piphilologist, for the 184th puzzle http://www.chess.com/tactics/server?id=123770 Like the_knife, you receive a prize for submitting the perfect diagram.

nameno1, try thinking of some trap to precede the smothered mate (altering the position of course) eg. http://www.chess.com/tactics/server?id=317781

For those who would like to save me time please submit puzzles as below. In return ’ll spend extra time looking for puzzle variations.

Please submit your puzzle in one of two ways  (both together would be perfection) :)

(1) Click on 'insert position or game' (tiny picture of a chessboard on the left of the comment box menu)

Choose 'game or sequence of moves'.

Enter the starting position of the puzzle, starting with the computer's first move (blunder or not). If you start with your move I will have to waste time creating a new diagram to create the TT puzzle.

Either use 'start with a blank chessboard' or  'Use an FEN string' which saves you a lot of time

(an FEN string is a way of writing down the position of all the pieces row by row with numbers for empty spaces, and letters for pieces (capitals for white). If you view any of your games there will be a little FEN box on the right of the screen where you can copy the FEN.)

Paste in your new FEN but remember to delete any numbers at the end leaving any little '-' marks eg.3r2k1/1p3ppp/r1n2q2/p7/2P5/PPN1P1nP/2Q3P1/R2RN1K1 w - - 0 1

You can continue the moves in the diagram past the point at which the puzzle becomes ambiguous because its often useful to have the optimal continuation visible for people who attempt the puzzle. (I only have to add brackets around these extra moves when I paste them into tactics trainer)

or

(b) link to the game + move number at which the puzzle starts (easiest for you, and enables me to evaluate all of the puzzle moves with a computer without having to enter the moves manually)

(This advice has been added to the first post)

Lympathy

Thanks for looking at mine Katonas, I have read the first post and I am still no closer to fully grasping how to ensure what is correct and I guess that it is obvious to others but not so to me, so I shall give up - clearly I am not meant for TT puzzles.

EndgameStudent

Any suggestions from anyone how to improve the explanation in the first post so people can more easily grasp the idea of avoiding ambiguity ie.that at every step of a puzzle there can be no alternative move which is evaluated by a strong computer as more than +0.30 (up to +1 allowed in exceptional circumstances)

Scottrf

So a third of a pawn vs a forced mate is considered ambiguity?

EndgameStudent

I've updated the ambiguity explanation in the first post to try to make it clearer.

Scottrf, up to +1 is ok for a forced mate however it usually only take me a few seconds to adjust the starting material to achieve -ve scores for alternative moves. Doing this very often enables the tactic to be much longer and challenging (hence the TOP TIP now added to the end of the first post).

EndgameStudent

I've updated the advice in the first post regarding the format of a submission.

EndgameStudent

I be working on page32 until Thursday. Please edit your post if you think you haven't followed the guidelines in the first post, so I can get through the submissions faster.

About the diagram I copied and pasted the PGN-file and put start and end at the beginning and the end of the puzzle. Was that a bad solution? Otherwise is there a good way to get the FEN-string from a position in a game? If you copy from the game you always get the final position.

Martin0

This is a very hard endgame problem. The line is the only line that forces a win, but it might take a while for a computer so solve it. This game is from otb and have been seen at chesscafe.com (link) at page 3-4. Probably my most famous endgame and the good thing is I found it in the game thinking over 20 min before making the first move. Smile

EndgameStudent

Martin0, thankyou I hadn't realized the FEN to the right of any chess.com game is stuck on the final position. I shall edit the first post and the one above.

I love endgame puzzles so I'm now looking forward to page34.

Why would your opponent let you mate him?

Wouldn't he be the better one to ask? He is the one that did it...Wink
