Tom-Tom.Two other boxers from South Africa deserve a mention. The first was Ezekiel Dhlamini a Zulu from Vryheid- a heavyweight Boxer in the 50's.He was never one of the greats but after his tragic death he became the central character of an African musical which hit London in the 60's-It was entitled "King Kong".One of the songs was entitled "Back of the Moon" Now Soweto in those days was an African Township,Despite the poverty amongst the Blacks there was quite a vibrant atmosphere. The Back of the Moon was a Shebeen establishment-If you speak to anyone from Ireland they will know immediately the meaning of a Shebeen-basically it is an illicit drinking den.In those days the South African government enforced numerous repressive measures on the black majority,One of them was Blacks were not permitted to buy or consume alcohol. Now history of America will tell you all about similar legislation leading to the era of prohibition.People drink willy nilly so the "Speakeasy" was born.Back of the Moon provided an escape from everyday misery endured.A bit of alcohol intake and the World seemed a better place-even though it was not.
The other Boxer was one Jake Ntuli a professional Fly/Bantam/Featherweight Boxer of the 50s and 60s.He was the first Black South African boxer to receive world acclaim.Look him up.
Come on Tom-Tom .Get this thread in the groove again.Sock it to them!
